The weather has been unusual lately; heat spells, droughts.
I’ve heard talk that this is unusual and an indication that the “end” is coming.
Is the weather nowadays more odd than back many years ago?
I’d be very skeptical of reports about fundamental changes in the weather.
Weather records don’t go back all that far to begin with–not far enough to provide a baseline from which to measure changes. And we have very selective memories about how bad or good the weather “used to be”. Add to this that there are people with political agendas whose position would be strengthened/weakened by reports of hotter/colder weather. So the likelihood of anyone reporting genuine, unbiased, repeatable studies of new weather extremes is pretty low, IMO.
Start by going to look up available studies. You might try insurance adjusters, state insurance commissions, scientific organizations, whether [no pun] a university or US gov’t (NOAA), environmental groups, and try and get some sources outside the US. Then, rather than working from “talk”, you’ll have some stidies to look at and compare methods, ulterior motives, etc…
The political agenda argument only goes so far, some of the time, BTW. After all, if the Audubon Society warned of something wrong with birds, just dismissing them as a bird interest group is hardly a worthwhile objection in itself. After all, where would you expect to see such information ?
We had a saying in my town that there were “hundred year records” broken every year.
The river would be at a “hundred year” high, or the temperature, or the amount of rain, or length of drought, or size of hail, or plagues of locusts.
If you measure 100 things, something will be way out of whack at all times, and usually several at once.
Well, that would explain these 10 foot locusts jumping around in my backyard.
Seriously, who was it that claimed that a slight weather anomaly means that the Apocalyps is upon us? Just curious: I’d like to avoid that kind of people, you know.
IMHO, I don’t think the weather is that different than it used to be. Weather is a dynamic system & variations are the norm. Heat spells, droughts, etc. are nothing new. Personally, I find New England winters to be milder then when I was a child…but I have not checked out stats on this. If overall climates start changing, then I’d look toward reasons such as global warming, etc. But even climate changes can be natural & are common throughout Earth’s history.
Also keep in mind that with today’s media, people hear about worldwide weather problems much more than they used to. So it may seem like things are crazier when in fact it may just be that people are hearing more about common weather patterns.
