Straight Dope on Twitter

@Str8dope_com

Why nothing more recent than 2015?

Because there are too few words allowed-Most of us are too damn long-winded. :wink:

I think Twitter is a fad. I actually don’t know the answer.

Is this reply from 8 years ago? Because if it’s actually from today you should know quite well that it’s far from being a “fad” at this point. Especially given that the President (gross) uses it as his chief communication tool.

Whoosh!

The times when Twitter could be useful is when the board goes down for some reason.

I suggested that last year. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=19282304&highlight=twitter#post19282304

It’s kind of a sarcastic woosh. I know Twitter has been around for quite some time so not really a fad, and I think there will be some form of instant communication, but I’m not sure it will be Twitter. I’m not convinced Facebook will be here in 10 years either so you can take this luddite’s opinion with a grain of salt :slight_smile:

We can but hope. I never use Facebook or Twitter. The former demands too much personal information and the latter is far too constrained for intelligent communication.

The President is a pissant, and his use of Twitter is NOT a strong endorsement for normal people adopting it.

Let’s keep politics to a more appropriate forum/thread. Please.

When Twitter first came out, I basically said to my daughters “I don’t get it … why would I want to use a service that seems just like a place to text message the public?” These days, all the text messaging programs on my phones let me be a lot more verbose than Twitter. Oh, the irony!

Hear here!

Twitter is a fast way to get information out, and Facebook is about interacting with friends. Neither one are for intellectual conversation.

Sure, you can have such conversations on Facebook, but it’s just because you’re doing so with friends that you would have had those conversations in real life.

The reason to object to Facebook is that it is moving our social lives online. Even I will admit that, while it has its upsides, that is problematic.

The main objection I have with Twitter is that people feel the need to post things when they have nothing to say. But I think the good outweighs the bad. You get your quick updates on things you care about, and the brevity requires joking. You get a nice idea of what people in the world are interested in, all because people feel compelled to share.

And I can learn all this from Twitter, with my actual participation being optional.
