I saw it in the theaters last year when it was released. I was definitely in the minority of the audience. It was a very good film portrayal of their rise as artists, although Dre and Cube were not portrayed in realistic ways, IMHO. Their stories were sanitized a bit, to make them more sympathetic. Best scene was Cube’s retaliatory song about NWA.
I really enjoyed it and didn’t want it to end, and I think it should’ve got nominated for more than just Best Writing, Original Screenplay.
All I can add to this thread is that after watching this it came to my attention that I have something in common with 3 members of NWA
we all used to drive 1977 Datsun B210’s.
There were some okay moments here and there but overall this movie was crap. Bland re-enactments of already well-known incidents, no sense of drama or honesty at all, and piles and piles of whitewashing out the darkest parts of N.W.A.'s history. Most of the acting was laughably bad. It felt like Paul Giamatti was in a different movie.
Why did Prince Arabian have to be completely written out of history? Why did they have to invent a fictional reconciliation with Eazy? It was so obviously an attempt to make themselves look good that I cannot take at face value the villain-ization of Jerry Heller. How bad was he really? I didn’t believe the scene of Ice Cube smashing up Bryan Taylor’s office until I found independent confirmation.
Ice Cube’s son looked remarkably like him though.
And that soundtrack was pretty dope.
great film, the young Dr. Dre was suprisingly convincing, and Ice Cube’s son did a great job of playing his dad.
