I am about 20 weeks along right now and saw a lovely looking roast beef sandwich at a deli counter. I had to buy it. About an hour later I open the package, took one bite, and spat it out. The whole sandwich went in the trash, and now I need to figure out something else for lunch…
No strange combination cravings, but I will see something and really want it. For about 10 minutes or so.
For number one, it was anything orange, particularly orange flavoured ice lollies. My poor husband did have to do the sitcom drive on more than one occasion - going from shop to shop in the middle of the night to try to restock for me. This time around it has been less extreme, but as I’m typing this I’m starting to think of the waiting lolly in the freezer and I’m going to get it as soon as I post!
I’ve never craved weird combinations, and actually much stronger than my cravings have been my revulsions. Both times I have been disgusted and revolted by the taste, nay the very thought, of bread. If I try to eat it, it tastes like ash and cardboard in my mouth. Doesn’t matter what sort - white, brown, wholemeal, anything: the thought of it sickens me. Last time I was ok after the baby was born, although I never went back to things like pita and tortillas. Do you have any idea how complicated work day lunches can be if you don’t eat bread?
Both times I was intermittently sick all the way through, and my mouth tasted really odd. I’m told this is a common side effect of pregnancy. I also salivated a lot in the first trimesters. So I would chew Kleenex, not because of a craving, but because it wasn’t food (food made me throw up), was absorbent, and the taste/smell of paper wasn’t immediately nauseating.
What?
I didn’t crave anything but couldn’t eat unprocessed meat for the first trimester- ham, hotdogs, McDonald’s, okay- real meat, puke.
I am just ending my first trimester. I’ve craved salt and fat more than usual. Simple carbs are particularly delicious: grilled cheese sandwiches, bowls of pasta with butter, chicken noodle soup. Mostly, though, I just crave MORE: I just want to eat and eat and eat. About the only way to be full–not stuffed, just full–is to sit down and plow through about 1000 calories in a sitting.
For me, the food actually tasted different - extra, extra good. Also, smells I used to like suddenly smelled rancid. Until I got pregnant, I would wear Ralph Lauren’s Romance every day. Then one day I put it on and had to shower again because it suddenly smelled like ass to me.
As for foods,
Pregnancy 1: veggie delites from Subway loaded with mayo and stuffed with Cheetos.
Pregnancy 2: as many cookies as I could get. And mochas. Ahhhh, the taste of a mocha, like manna from heaven.
With the first pregnancy, I craved sauerkraut, cold, right out of the glass jar, with loads of yellow mustard slathered on top. Ate my way through quarts of it. My husband nearly threw up every time he saw me enjoying this. Now I couldn’t imagine eating those things in combination.
When I could eat, I wanted beef and fruit. Not together, and nothing that gave off any odor at all. McDonald’s burgers were good, because I could go thru the drive-thru with the windows open and wolf a couple before the smell got out of the bag. I also bought pre-cut watermelon in January :o paid $8 a pound for it. I ate a lot of white rice with butter, in the vain hope of getting some calories in (and I lost 50 pounds over the whole thing, including the 8 pound baby)
