Strange Manifestation of WMV Player

Really, I searched the board and didn’t see the problem I’m currently having with my Windows media player.

For some odd reason, it’s decided that it will play content ofline. But the stuff online it will just happily tell me it’s playing and I get no sound and no video. It’s kind of aggravating because the two sites I like to listen to and watch are casting in wmv.

Any ideas what to do short of setting my computer on fire?

What version of Windows and of WMP?

What happened or was changed between when it last worked and first didn’t work?

Is the problem the same regardless of content type?

Windows XP Home Edition for Toshiba.
I think it’s Windows Media Player 10, but I won’t swear to that. The thing doesn’t have an “about” menu option, which is where I usually look for that info.
The only thing that changed besides the date (from one day to the next) is that I all of a sudden got TWO internet hijackers and I’ve killed one and the other’s almost dead now.
I’m connected to the Internet at my public school in Busan. So, it’s quite possible that some nasty thing got onto the computer that way.

I hate custom OS editions. But if you’ve had hijackings occur I guess that’s your prime suspect; I hope you have good backups!

But is the problem the same regardless of file type you try to play? Mpeg, avi, wmp? Install Quicktime from Apple and try an avi through there.
