The function of ATMB is to address problems. Typically problems between the moderators and the other posters. It has tighter rules than the pit, but it’s the nature of ATMB to sometimes run a little hostile. The mods accept a lot of hostility from posters in ATMB that wouldn’t be appropriate between posters in the typical IMHO thread. At least, that’s MHO.
I’d also argue that “who the fuck cares” is not always a hostile phrase. It can just be used for emphasis, and that’s what @DrDeth seems to be doing here.
…so do you agree that the tone of What_Exit’s post was more hostile than D_Anconia’s? But that’s okay, because the mods often get hostility from posters in ATMB, even though the opening post here wasn’t hostile at all?
But whether or not a post is “hostile” is entirely subjective. And being on the receiving end of a “who the fuck cares”, when it should be plainly obvious that “I do, in fact care” seems pretty hostile to me.
This is exactly what I was thinking. The only real difference between this incident and the Martin_Hyde one is that the M_H unmasking took place in the Pit. A mod note saying to take any discrepancies to the Pit doesn’t seem out of line.
That bugs me, too, when posters don’t provide links for context. I don’t think What_Exit 's post was remotely inappropriate. Posters who don’t link to what they’re complaining about do waste everybody’s time.
No. I made no comparisons, and i don’t understand why you think i did. But if you press me, i think What_Exit’s post was less hostile: More a whine about an unhelpful post structure than a gotcha implying they caught a lie.
I just note that i think a higher degree of hostility is acceptable in ATMB than in most IMHO threads, and therefore it’s pointless to say, “i think this ATMB post is hostile, why did you moderate that IMHO post?” And by pointless, i mean missing the point of how each forum is used.
Yes, definitely my bad for not linking to the post/thread in question. I thought I had, but I must have hit submit too soon, as in I copied, but didn’t paste. Sorry.
It’s cool, I figured it out. I also assumed you’d meant to put in the link when you started “in this thread”, because if that bit of text was a link it would make so much more sense.
For the record, I didn’t feel like I was being stalked and I wasn’t offended, although I did take the remark as implying that I was lying. No skin off my back, but I found it unpleasant. That’s why I felt the need to clarify this point. So, to recap :
A couple of months before Covid, I (45) and Gini (34) met.
We had a two and a half relationship which ended last month.
I’m now 47. Gini is now… 37 (and the math checks out thanks to that pesky “and a half” bit).
You sound like me. I think there’s a specific kind of blindness that can’t see typos or other mistakes despite multiple checks before hitting the button.
Well, besides the fact there was no discrepancies, there is also the fact that Moonrise’s difference was minor and didn’t change anything, whilst MH was apparently making things up to show expertise.
But I see a big issue here.
There should be nothing wrong at all, with a poster making minor changes in his personal life to obfuscate things for the Doxxers. That doesn’t mean they are lying or a troll. As long as the minor items are not used to make you into an expert.
Sure claiming you are a Doctor in one thread about medical issues, and a Lawyer in another about legal ones- that is lying and maybe trolling. But mentioning you are 45 vs 47, or living in one town in SoCal rather than another similar one- that makes no difference to the discussion (assuming you are familiar with both).
But all this obsessively searching for minor discrepancies about a poster (mostly because you disagree with that poster) - that is really the Jerkish behavior , and should be moderated.
I mean- nearly all of us are sorta liars- my name is not really DrDeth (and I am not a real doctor, but I think I have made that clear), and I sorta think Superdude here wasn’t given that moniker on his birth cert. We create a online personae- one which is an alter ego, one which should be close, but not necessarily exactly the same as in real life. Minor details changed to avoid doxxers NEED to be acceptable. Pitting posters due to jerks finding those tiny discrepancies should be outright banned, as it is the start of doxxing. (and yes, we don’t allow that here, but there are other MBs).
Yes, obviously. I mean there have been many posts in ATMB which are much more hostile and accusing. Even saying “that warning was richly deserved” is sorta hostile.
