Strange Parrot Behavior

I have a mitred conure parrot and he recently started a new behavior. When I am holding him on my hand in front of my face, he juts his beak towards me, opens his mouth and makes a sound like “Hah” three or four times. The sound is not loud and it sounds a little like blowing with your mouth open. It is kind of on the angry side or maybe like he is trying to scare me. Does anyone know what this is all about? Why is he doing this?

Do not lean over in front of this parrot. Unless you want to, that is.

I only know two things;
I know what I need to know
And
I know what I want to know

What is that supposed to mean mangeorge?

Hi perkit, I have a jenday conure and he has never done that but he will sometimes do this thing that is almost like a dog barking, kind of like he is scolding me or something. How long has your bird been doing this? And does he talk yet? Maybe he is mimicing something he has seen.

Not much help, sorry.

Just a feeble attempt at some sick humor, perkitl. Implying that your parrot was uttering a mating call. Sorry. I developed a trashy mouth partly from working in oil refineries.

Wow mangeorge! I work in an oil refinery, too! Conoco Refinery in Westlake, Louisiana What a coincidence.

Hi Ducky
Red barks at me, too. I think he is fussing at me when he does it. We play on the floor and if I scare him he barks. Red is nine months old. He says quite a few things. Like: Hi, What are you doing?, Step up, Good boy, Pretty boy, what?, why? That’s all I can think of right now. Does your bird talk? Does your bird regurgitate on you? Red does. They say it means he really likes me and is trying to feed me. That is suppossed to be the highest compliment he can pay me. I think it is grotesque.

What ya’ll do, go to bed? I’m not so lucky. Working the night shift. :frowning:

For some reason, my Norweigian Blue doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all…

I know exactly what your Norweigan Blue is doing. He’s pining for the fjords.

Geeze! Thought I was back in the “barf” thread again.

Here’s hoping that all parrots hate me.

Bluepony, is a Norwegian Blue a type of parrot?

Thanks EnigmaOne. I am still laughing. That was a good one.

You didn’t get it from the “Monty Python” pet store I hope!
Peace,

here is what I think about the thread, not the puking thing. I have been working with birds (parakeets mainly) for almost 13 years, and I have never seen them do anything like that, to human at least…
How long have you had this bird? SInce it was a baby, or freshly born. Because if you have had it since it was born, it thinks you are it’s mother, and will act starngely towards you. I know that the “hah” sound it makes is a sign of aggresion, it is trying to scare you way, maybe becuase you are to close to him/her.

And the puking thing, the only reason that bird would try and regurgitate on you is if it thought you were it’s offspring. Which is really unlikely because of the size difference, but birds have been known to do strange things…

This bird is nine months old and I have had him since he was five months old or as soon as he was weened.

so you haven’t had him for that long then right? Do you leave it home by itself all day while you are at work? Since it is so young, it doesn’t know what to be afraid of, as compared to the wild. If you go to work all day everyday and leave the bird home by itself, then it will probably start forgetting you at this young age, so when you bring it nice and close to your face, then it will proably start freaking out. Try and spend some more time with him if you can, then see how things go, ok?

This bird is rarely alone and is completely spoiled rotten. He loves me to death and will bite anyone who tries to take him from me when I am holding him. Believe me that is not it. Remember, he tries to feed me he loves me so much.
