Anybody else with a Series 2 TiVo noticing this problem? It started around the beginning of the Olympics and has persisted. For no apparent reason and with no apparent pattern, some shows are getting cut off before they should stop recording. For example, on a 30 minute show, when playing, the TiVo will show a 30-minute progress bar, with only, say, 23 minutes filled in green and the rest transparent. And sure enough, the recording ends there. This affects maybe 25% of all recordings. The cut-off times range anywhere from two to about 10 minutes in the worst case.
Up until now it was tolerable since it wasn’t happening to the Olympics coverage, but tonight it cut off several valuable minutes of Scrubs.
Ah ha! Sometimes (rarely) the SDMB isn’t the best board for finding stuff out. Turns out a lot of people are having this same problem and the TiVo people have figured it out and provided a temporary fix. Wahoo.
Two things, does a new recording start immidiatly after the first one ended. Two if you go to that show in the NP list does it say something like Duration 0:23*? It sounds like clipping. What that means is if two shows overlap instead of not recording the lower one at all, it will record what it can of the lower one, but it will make sure to get the entire higher one. I can’t remember off the top of my head where it, but there is away to turn it off.
On my TIVO (love, love, love it!) I have the option of having the recording start early (1 min, 2 min, 3 min, 15 min) and having it stop late (same settings as listed). I always make sure to have something start two minutes early and tape, oops, record about 15 minutes later. I’ll be damned if I miss the starting/end shots of the Simpsons!
Be careful with this if you are TIVOing back to back shows. If you tell it to run long on your 7:30 show, and have 2 8:00 shows set to record (assuming dual tuner of course), it will not record one of them.
It would appear they have fixed that problem. Do you know if this is a Series 2 feature? I’m still plugging away on my first gen receiver (bought the lifetime TIVO pass and I’m trying to get my money’s worth ). I’ll check my unit when I get home but doubt I have this.
Thanks for the link BTW, I’ll have to check out that site and see what other cool features I’m missing.
As far as I know, it’s only a Series 2 feature. It was delievered with the 7.2.1 software update. Discussion here. Sometimes I wish I had a Series 1: Series 2 are much more difficult to hack. I stupidly bought Jeff Keegan’s book: halfway in he sheepisly admits that most of the book only applies to the first gen models. Thanks for not putting that on the cover, Jeff.
