Strange, unknown email "returned to sender"

This morning I found an email that had (supposedly) been returned to sender–that is -me-. Uh… unfortunately, I never sent it. WTF?! Has this ever happened to anyone else? Does this mean that my account has been “hacked?” GAH! I blocked the sender and deleted the email; is there anything else I should have done?

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

xash explains it here.

It sounds like your email address was spoofed. There’s nothing you can do, nor is there anything wrong with your computer or email. Basically someone else, who you probably don’t even know, has a virus and is “fooling” you into thinking your computer is sending out emails to other people. Your computer isn’t actually doing this, nor do you have the virus the other guy has. (Well, it’s possible that you do, but whether you do or not has nothing to do with whether the other guy does.)

There was a thread, whose name I can’t recall, a few days ago in which xash offered a great explanation of what it means to have your email address spoofed. If you do a search on his name, you can probably find it.

Thanks, Einmon and Miss Bunny; that does explain it for me. Doesn’t explain -why- some folks seem to have nothing better to do than to cause problems for others, though. Gah! WTF is up with some folks?!

Thanks again!
