strange videocard trouble (TNT2)

A couple of days ago, when I turned on my computer, I found that the main monitor was displaying dimmer than usual, there are horizontal “shadows” wherever there is something dark displayed, and the colors seem to have not enough red (that last might be my imagination). But there have been no new instability issues or other visual artifacts.

At first, I thought that this was surely a monitor hardware problem, but I run a dual monitor system, and swapped them out, the problem stayed with the video card, not the monitor.

I’ve since updated to the latest drivers with no apparent improvement (or new problems, so that’s something). Has anyone else seen or heard of such a problem, or know what might have caused it?

No way!
This sounds like my problem. It seemed to just spontaneously start one day. I turned on the system and I had gray bars across the screen where there was some dark writing or a title bar or something. Sounds just like your problem. I can not make it go away.

Try removing and reseating the card. If it has a fan make sure the fan is going. All in all it sounds like a video card hardware problem that will require service or replacement.

Sounds like a hardware problem on the card to me too.

On the bright side, if you have to replace it, getting another TNT2-based card will probably be cheap, fifty bucks or less maybe.

Or, if your budget can handle it, this may be a good time to upgrade to a Geforce-2 or Geforce-3. I’ve seen Ge-2 boards for $99, but Ge-3s are still like $250 to $300 last time I checked.
