Since I just saw it yesterday on a Netflix rental, I must toss in a vote for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou although I will support the Gummo citation already given.
Another that I saw on cable yesterday was Feardotcom that may be even weirder.
(Yesterday was weird watching day.)
Does anybody know of an old B&W thriller/mystery/noir that featured a slow zoom from a distance that showed a standing person full-length up to an extreme close-up of an eye, then a razor blade slicing the eyeball? I have seen some Daliesque things since then but not the exact same image/sequence I’m remembering. Maybe what Spellbound had in the way of a Dali-inspired (or -constructed) dream sequence is something I’m merging with this other thing. Help?
Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog) by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. THE surrealist milestone which caused riots upon its premiere. Would make a second feature paired with Faust
Would make a GREAT second feature paried with Faust.
Sheesh, my mad proof-reading skillz aren’t so hot today.
:smack:
PAIRED
I give up.
Gracias, Hodge! Believe it or not, my high school Spanish teacher’s name was Hodge. An excellent teacher.
My vote for strange, yet somehow unable to stop watching like some kind of trainwreck movie is “Strange Days” with Angela Bassett and Ralph Fiennes. I would say this is actually a good movie, and very watchable, but also quite disturbing - if I recall correctly, there are scenes shot from the perspective of the killer/rapist.
I suspect Rob Zombie’s new movie, “The Devil’s Rejects”, might be a future addition to this list. Or maybe just to incredibly violent and gory movie lists. At any rate, I plan to go out of my way to not see this movie.
Old movies I stumbled across as a teen. I don’t seem to find 'em anymore; I must do less aimless channel flipping.
If… with a very young Malcolm McDowell. It’s kinda about an English boarding school and a group of alienated students but very surreal. Was made even more weird becasue I ddin’t realize that it wasn’t uncommon for the students to still wear the very old-fashioned uniforms and I thought it was flipping between time frames.
The Ruling Class. Peter O’Toole is a gentle, insane guy who thinks he’s Jesus and becomes the lord of an English manor. And it’s a musical. Very surreal and very interesting but mind blowing if you have no idea what to expect.
Knightriders, a non-horror film by George Romero starring Ed Harris about a band of traveling entertainers who stage motorcycles “jousts” for money. Sounds like it’d be dreadful but it was actually strangely compelling.
A beautiful film.
Nobody’s mentioned El Topo yet. It’s hard to describe the plot: there’s a guy and a kid and they’re riding a horse. And there was a woman and some fighting.
Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.
It is. I even bought a copy on VHS way back when because I loved it so much. But it is an awfully odd premise. The good strange movies stick in my head way more than crappy bits of weirdness.
May I suggest Something for Everyone, if only for the “memorable” seduction scene between Angela Lansbury and Michael York?
I’ve seen Hugo Pool, though I actually rented it on purpose, which might be even worse.
I spend the whole time trying to figure out wtf was going on with Malcolm McDowell’s Brooklyn accent.
Phantasm has got to be right up there with the strangest.
Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death
Very odd film, “starring” Shannon Tweed, Bill Maher, and Adrienne Barbeau.
It’s called Female Trouble, and I watch it over and over again.
And I give you Chained for Life, starring the original Hilton Sisters.
Weirdest, and possibly worst, movie I’ve ever seen is Wax, or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees. Hated, hated, hated it.
Daniel
Very, very odd.
The strangest movies I’ve actually watched:
Treasure Of The Four Crowns
Brazil
Strangest movie I tried watching:
8 1/2
And althought they’re TV series I just want to mention:
Excel Saga
Puni Puni Poemy
Great stuff.
