Strawberry Shortcake Base: Biscuit, pound cake or other cake?

Oh boo hoo.

Why don’t you substitute grapes for the strawberries while you’re at it? Only some pedant would insist it isn’t still strawberry shortcake, right?

You really should start socializing with a better class of people.

Biscuit. Bob Evans does a decent strawberry shortcake during strawberry season. Alas.

I use shortcake. Similar to a bicuit, I suppose.

 But that’s not one of the options.

Shoot, right now you could serve me Strawberry Shortcake on rye bread; I’d eat it.

I’m hungry.

Ditto. Except my mom’s not dead. Bisquick biscuits, lightly sweetened as mentioned above. Anything else is okay- better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick- but it’s not strawberry shortcake.

Biscuit recipe, baked in one giant 9’’ biscuit in a cake pan. Then cut into wedges.

I don’t get it.

Shortcake is a type of baked good, distinguishable from both biscuits and pound cake. It is a lot like a biscuit, but a shortcake has a more cookielike or piecrusty texture, and is at least somewhat sweet.

Shortcake/biscuit, as outlined in my copy of “Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens”. It’s in the chapter after the eel and squirrel recipes.

I am definitely making some of this soon! I have a strawberry bed and have a ton of frozen strawberries, so all I gotta do is thaw, cook, thicken and slap together the biscuits and whip cream. Jealous??

Many people will try to pass off a real biscuit as shortcake, too.

Generally I use angel food cake, or pound cake, store bought. I don’t care for the strawberries that are available out of strawberry season, I think that they are tasteless. During strawberry season, it’s much too hot to fire up the oven.

I also refuse to buy several other fruits and vegetables out of season, because they just don’t taste good.

I know that. I responded that I use shortcake when I make mine. It would clearly fall under the “other” category.

I was trying to understand garygnu’s response to me.

I read it as surprise that the OP did not include the obvious “shortcake” response as one of the options in the poll.

My read is that is was not commenting on your post directly, but rather using responding to your post in such a way as to express generic surprise that in a poll about Strawberry Shortcake, actual shortcake would not be given its own listing.

That makes sense, but I was about the 6th person to mention shortcake, and Gary had already participated in the thread. Threw me off.

I use the prepackaged rounds. But are they shortcake or sponge cake?

If the store is out of the rounds, I use whatever reasonable facsimile the store has, usually angel food cake.

As to what you call it, I’m not thinking about that when I’m NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.

That’s pretty much my take on it. If I have a dish that consists of sweetened strawberries, some sort of sweetish pastry, and some sort of cream, I’m happy. Strawberries and ice cream over angel food or pound cake? It’s good. Strawberries and whipped cream over shortcake? It’s good. As long as the strawberries are good, I’m happy.

The pre-packaged rounds are not shortcake. Shortcake is dry and crumbly. It is a type of biscuit, but really distinct from anything you would find labeled a biscuit in the states.
