Option 1: Strawberry Shortcake- an all-American classic, I like to make the shortcake with Bisquick, just very slightly sweetened. Real homemade whipped cream. Mmmm, one of the true simple pleasures in life.
Option 2: Cream cheese pound cake with strawberry coulis- I have never made this before, but I have all the ingredients and it looks and sounds delicious. I bet I could eat that strawberry sauce just all by itself.
I can’t decide what to make tomorrow (Sunday). Please vote now!
ETA: I messed up the poll thing- can you just tell me which you prefer?
Both look good, but I’m giving a slight edge to the shortcake in option 1. It looks lighter, and I like lighter things with strawberries which has a delicate flavor to me.
You should definitely make that poundcake sometime. I made that recipe last Christmas and it was a huge hit, although I made it with blueberry coulis instead of strawberry. I will definitely be making that pound cake again - the cream cheese just gives it a tang that is really great.
I didn’t make either today- I had to clean almost my whole house and that’s some labor, right there.
So, I have decided to make the cream cheese pound cake, tomorrow. I just had shortcake not too long ago so I don’t have that craving for it, but I am getting pretty excited about the pound cake. Mmmm. You can have a bite, Bees.
Make sure for the poundcake you leave a lot of time to bake it.
The recipe says 1 1/4 hours, and I don’t know if maybe my oven temperature is off or something, but I had to leave it in for about 20 or 30 minutes extra (can’t remember exactly). I just kept checking every once in a while until a skewer inserted into the cake came out clean.
Strawberry shortcake isn’t bad, per se, but the dessert itself isn’t all that great. What’s important is the ambiance associated with the dessert: You need a bunch of kids and a grandmother, and you make a day of going to pick the strawberries, and then all the kids help Gramma whip up some cream, and then you eat it on the front porch in June as the Sun’s going down with your feet dangling off the porch swing. That’s what’s great about strawberry shortcake. If we’re just talking about the dessert itself, by all means go with that poundcake instead.
Well, I don’t want to say that your grandmother was a bad cook, but I have to disagree. I’m not counting that pseudoshortcake with storebought little sponge cakes- that’s just nasty. But homemade strawberry shortcake… mmm mmm good. See now you make me want that instead.
