What is your Favorite type of Cake?

Throughout my life cake has been my favorite desert. I prefer it over pie, pudding, or candy.

My favorite has changed throughout the years.

As a young kid my birthday cakes were German Chocolate. Then as a teenager I discovered my grandmothers Carrot Cake.

Currently, I like a yellow cake with chocolate icing best. Or a strawberry bundt cake with no icing is my second choice.

What’s your favorite cake?
Also, did your mom put toothpicks in the cake so the layers wouldn’t slide around as she iced? I still watch out for toothpicks as I eat cake.

I didn’t attempt a poll because there’s too many choices.

Favorite cake? Cake.

  1. Angel Food
  2. German Chocolate
  3. Cheese
  4. Carrot
  5. Red Velvet
  6. Icebox Fruit (not that Christmas shit that makes good building materials)
  7. Strawberry Short
  8. Bundt (any flavor as long as it’s gooey)
  9. Chocolate
  10. Devil’s Food

I’m sure somebody will mention one that I’d have to wedge into my list somewhere.

I like a good carrot cake the best, probably.

Free cake.

Followed by German Chocolate.

Once you get 20 solid choices, a poll would be fun!

My actual favorite cake is a slice of simple yellow/butter cake. Instead of nasty frosting, just give me a spoonful of warmed fruit preserves for the top. To the legions out there that consider cake to be nothing more than a frosting delivery system. Don’t worry, you can have my share, fight it out among yourself.

I’m more of a pie girl than a cake fan, but I do love a tres leches cake.

Cheese cake.

My birthday cake for the last 12 years:

Spice cake with cream cheese frosting that is more cheesy than sugary.

Cheese and German Chocolate with the coconut icing.

cwPartner’s absolutely sublime cheesecake. Followed distantly by coconut cake with tart lemon filling.

Tres Leches is awesome.

But my absolute favorite cake is from a specific bakery in NY. - Valencia Bakery in the Bronx. It was where we’d always get birthday cakes or special occasions cakes growing up. Always pineapple filling. The cake itself is ridiculously moist. As in, actually wet. And their buttercream isn’t like any other buttercream I’ve ever had. It’s just perfect.

My 40th birthday is coming up and if I could have one wish, it’d be to have a Valencia cake for my festivities. My mother called me a couple of weeks ago just to let me know she was in the Bronx on family business and picked up a cake to bring home for my sisters. Ouch.

Carrot cake

I have three:

  1. Lava cake

  2. Flourless chocolate cake

  3. Plain white cake with white icing, as long as appropriate procedures are followed. You see, the best part of this cake is the bottom stuff that sticks to the cardboard liner of the baker’s box. This part of the cake has been deemed “cake crud” or “cake crap” by my family and must be scraped off the box with a knife and eaten promptly or you haven’t had cake. You’ve just had crap. The crap or crud must be part of the cake. Crap.

Red velvet… umm… takes the cake.

Any cake is fine with me as long as it isn’t boxed - I’m a purist and love cake from scratch. Any kind of cake.

I make a kick-butt Guinness Stout cake and can attest that all of Marcel Desaulnier’s recipes are phenomenal.

I’m not a fan of cake. Texture doesn’t appeal to me. I generally prefer ice cream cake for my birthday.

Like the OP, I think it’s hard to beat a good ol’ yellow cake with chocolate icing. I also love chocolate cake with the white icing that has cream cheese in it.
