Alice, I’m not sure if that was directed at me, but let me assure you that my Gramma would never dream of using the little store-bought sponge cakes. Really, did you think that someone who would pick the strawberries the same day and whip the cream by hand would not put similar care into the cakes themselves?

I did make the cake. It was delicious, everything I’d hoped for.
Some years ago, my mother prepared a sponge cake to be had with strawberries. She also offered either whipped cream or custard sauce to go on top. My sister, in a moment of true genius, said, “Why not both?” And both it was from then on.
So, in the spirit of my sister (who was about forty when she made that suggestion - I was about thirty), I say, why choose? Go with both!
