Strom Thurmond Dead at 100

Not being South Carolinian, black, or gay (yeah, no one’s perfect, huh?), I dont really have an opinion either way on a 100 year old mad dying. I mean, it’s not like no one saw it coming.

It seems to me that whatever racist, homophobic tendencies he had, he must have been doing something right, to represent his state for 47 years. I would guess that if his personal beliefs were so reprehensible, he would not have served 8 terms in office.

It’s just embarassing to read some of the comments made in this thread, and others like it. I understand that you may not like him personally for whatever reason, and I don’t hold any of that against anyone. Like I said, I don’t feel one way or another about him. But to compare him to Hitler? That’s an ignorant remark, an insult to our intelligence, and a slap to the collective face of South Carolinians.

He did what he did, right or wrong, history will judge him accordingly. Leave a dead man rest.

Or it represents the bigotry of the area that kept him in his seat for so many years.

It isn’t like Jesse Helms(who is leaving, thank the gods) is a junior version of Thurmond when it comes to sexism or bigotry.

His constituents kept re-electing him too.

So, that they are reprehensible is something that their constituents want to inflict on the country.

No.

Well, the other option for the last six or so terms was voting for a Democrat. The “Yellow Dog” Democrats are now “Yellow Dog” Republicans. Fritz Hollings doesn’t count. He’s been grandfathered. Any new Dem faces will have a tough battle ahead, which is why most Dems want Fritz to run again. He would most likely win, where any others don’t have much of a chance.

So if 51% of the people are racist and homophobic then it’s okay?

I have no personal animosity towards Strom Thurmond. I never met the man. I despised the man as a matter of principle; he was a leader of one of the worst movements in this nation’s history.

The only good thing Thurmond accomplished by living as long as he did, was he got to see history judge him. The racism that he espoused all his life was denounced by most Americans.
