Space Shuttle Columbia deaths
Yep. I was picking my mom up at Dulles International that morning. She was flying in the Rapid City when the news came in.
Me: “Hey. Isn’t it terrible?”
Mom: “What?”
Me: “Oh, I guess they wouldn’t tell you, would they? Columbia broke up on reentry.”
I turned on CNN that morning and for several moments thought they were re-playing the day’s coverage from the Challenger disaster as some sort of rememberance (I knew it was around the right time of the year for something like that).
It was a good several moments before I realized it was real, current, breaking news and not a replay or tribute and that the announcer had said “Columbia” and not “Challenger”.
