Stuck......1099 Tax Question

Recently did a video shoot for a company and they requested a 1099 before they paid me.

I downloaded the 1099-MISC form but how do i fill it out as a business?

There is no section to list EIN or SSN. There is an account number box, but is very unclear on what this actually means.

How the hell do i fill this thing out so i can get paid!

First of all, if they’re paying you, THEY should fill out the 1099-MISC. But assuming they’re lazy and want you to do it for them, there should be a box labeled “Recipient’s Identification Number.” That’s your SSN (or EIN if you have one.)

The amount you got paid goes in box 7 as Non-employee compensation.

ETA here (PDF) is the form straight from the horse’s mouth. The payer and recipient’s information boxes are on the left side.

They should have requested that you complete a Form W-9 “Request for Taypayer ID and Certification” before they paid you. Then they would be responsible for issuing a 1099 to you no later tha 01/31/2014 showing the amount you were paid.

They are also responsible for sending a copy of the 1099 they issue you to the IRS with all other 1099s issued in 2013!

They have no clue what they’re doing in terms of reporting subcontractor payments…which is really Accounting 101 (or 099, to be honest)…dumbasses.

Yeah, this makes no sense. They are the ones who are supposed to fill out the 1099, and they should be requesting, as mentioned above, a W-9 from you. I deal with both filing 1099s for contractors I hire and I fill out W-9s when I contract for others.

Plus the 1099 form you found online cannot be submitted by the company. They need an official printed version from the IRS (or you can find it at office supply stores like Staples come tax time.)
