I’m a Canadian… I’m 2 years away from graduating and going to university. I have my hopes set on going to Edinburgh University, in Scotland.
In order for me to go to Scotland, I need a Student visa. And as I’ve already worked out the costs, I’m going to need a job, too. So. I need a Student Visa and a Working visa.
The thing is, I have no idea where I would go to find out about getting a visa for britain. Canadian government? British Embassy? British High Commision?
Good luck on your visas, magic8ball Edinburgh’s a great place to go to Uni. What do you want to study?
Be prepared, though, for possible disappointment on the working visa issue. My experience in this area is about 15 years’ old, so things may have changed, but the terms of my student visa were that I wasn’t allowed to work at all (I found childminding and selling door-to-door were pretty reasonable cash-in-hand jobs. Not enough to support myself without parental help, tho’).
Canucks under the age of 27 are allowed to live and work in the UK (inc England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) for up to 2 years. (:
SWAP is a program designed to assist canucks in their travels. They provide all the forms for a fee. If you go with SWAP the support funds required will be $500 less than without.
Same goes for Aussies … but it’s generally studying at the same time that’s the problem. Your link doesn’t mention that the program includes permission to study in the UK, and none of the testimonials (unless I’m missing something) mention study either, so I’d guess it’s not included.
YEah… I was kind of anxious about the fact that I would have to put away 10000$ a year Just to live on…
But the thing is that since I’m a Northern resident, for every year I go to school here in Yellowknife the Government pays for 1 semester at school. I can either pay it back, or come back to the north and work here and they take an amount off for every month you live here. Its complicated. So, pretty much all I have to worry about is living expenses… Still, its a lot of money.
And I couldn’t get the pound note to work… but I’m on a laptob, so that might be a factor.
I don’t remember halls of residence (circa 1990) as being particularly cheap compared to flat-sharing - just slightly more convenient (eg, no cooking needed)
I managed to live pretty frugally on somewhere between £ 2,500 to £ 3,000 a year - converting to Canadian and adjusting for cost-of-living increases that comes to $9,400 - $11,300. I think $10K a year sounds like a pretty good ballpark figure - I certainly wouldn’t want to assume any less than that if I was financing UK study now
Cat Fight, I admit, 10000 IS alot of money, but you have to take into account that allot of that is going to be pub money and food money… I’l also probably spend a fortune on tours and stuff… Aspidistra, that didn’t work either… I think its my laptop Keyboard. Its screwed up.
Walloon, Canada USED to be part of the same empire. I think it was in '67 that we became our own indepentant nation or whatever. We aren’t part of the United Kingdom. We’re part of the commonwealth, but not the UK. The queen has no control over our actions.
