Yes, that’s precisely what happens. That you have two eyes and DON’T have binocular vision astounds me.
On the other hand, you can manage without it. Andre de Toth, who directed the 1953 3-D epic House of Wax was blind in one eye. I’ve heard of another 3-D director who only had one usable eye as well, but I forget wgho it was.
I lost binocular vision when I was 16. Had an accident and I’m blind in the left eye.
The world does not appear flat to me. I can estimate distances between far away objects with reasonable accuracy. Judging relationships between close up objects is harder… I bump into door frames with embarrassing frequency. I do not like when people hand me things, because I often miss when trying to take it from them. I am not allowed to pour drinks at parties.
I hate walking down steps, because they are the one thing that does flatten out complete. I cannot tell where one step ends and another begins. Steep steps have become a slight phobia of mine.
Wel, maybe she saw a cat/dog spay in progress. Many surgeons, myself included, will tilt the table (lowering the head) thus shifting abdominal contents forward. Many human surgeries have “unusual” positioning requirements as well. See: lithotomy position for a very mild example.
Colophon, try this experiment. Choose some object on a far wall. A picture will do. Now hold your index finger in front of your nose about 12 inches away. Look at the picture. How many fingers do you see? Now look at your finger. How many pictures do you see?
Yep, that’s me basically. I have one very dominant eye, to the extent that with both eyes open, one does the vast majority of the seeing. (With the “good” eye closed, I can still see, but reading is a real chore).
I don’t have any problems with bumping into things, missing things that people hand me, driving etc, although my squash game isn’t as great as it might be.
I obviously do have some binocular vision, because (as I noted in a previous SDMB thread) after many years of trying I recently - many years after the fad passed - finally managed to see a couple of Magic Eye images. Only a very few of them work for me, though. And 3D glasses? No good at all for me.
That is interesting, because if I look at steps, especially if I’m going down, I almost invariably stumble. I wonder if that’s because of my bad binocular vision. I never noticed them looking “flat,” but I don’t have as severe a case as you do, since I have some vision in my “bad” eye, and my eyes are corrected with glasses (I have found that glasses don’t completely “fix” the binocular problem as they do with making things more focused.)
A friend told me about a conversation she had with some guy she worked with. She has a degree in history, specializing in Roman and Greek. A group of them were talking about something, and this guy said ‘Well you know that the Roman empire fell because they were all gay’. My friend started naming all the real reasons that the Roman empire fell, and asked for evidence of the gay thing. This guy responded with ‘Oh so because you have a degree in this you think you know something about it?’
Mine is second-hand. A coworker’s BIL believes that everyone in the world is descended from the Nephilim (I think that’s what he said), a race of superhuman giant alien beings…or something.
My mother also believes if you follow a certain type of yoga and sage it can cure cancer and AIDS. My mother. That would be the registered nurse.
Two, but one is solid (the one on the right, as seen by my good left eye) while the other one is very ghostly and see-through (the one on the left, as seen by my poor right eye)
One, but it’s blurry cos it’s not in focus!
Something I’ve often wondered but never been able to get a straight answer… for me, with one dominant eye, the finger as seen with both eyes is in the same position as it appears to be when viewed with my good eye only. When I switch to the bad eye, the finger appears to move. For those of you with two equally good eyes, is the position of your finger when viewed with both eyes somewhere “in between” the positions with left and right eyes only? I don’t think I worded that too well but hopefully you know what I mean…
NB - Sorry for the hijack.
I once got into an argument with my mom over evolution. I’m a former archaeologist and I had absolutely no idea that she didn’t believe in evolution. We were chatting about it and she said, “You know, I just can’t reconcile those ‘old’ bones with the story of Adam and Eve.”
I said, “But that’s just a story - it’s not real.”
“I know, but I can’t reconcile evolution with it.”
“There’s nothing to reconcile - you’re comparing a story to reality.”
“Yeah, but I still can’t reconcile the two.”
“You’re not supposed to - one is a STORY.”
“Yea, but I still can’t reconcile the two.” (She said that a couple more times - it was like talking to a broken record.)
Finally she said, “Besides, you can’t believe in evolution and believe in God. Look at you. You’re an archaeologist, so you’re an atheist.”
“Just because I have an archaeology degree does not mean I’m an atheist.”
“Yes it does.”
“No it doesn’t.”
And so on. I didn’t bother to mention that I’m not sure if I do believe in God because I didn’t want to continue the conversation.
Mika, that’s not an uncommon belief, though I think you may be misremembering the particulars. There is a passage in the Book of Genesis in which the “Sons of God” (i.e., fallen angels) seduce (or rape, depending on whom you ask) the daughters of men; their children are giants and heroes of old. Some persons who believe in that sort of thing say that the purpose of the flood was to wipe out all such divine-human halfbreeds; others say that, no, their soulless descendents walk the Earth to this day (see my post above).
What kind of scary ass cows has she seen roaming around?!
[Troy McClure] That cow would eat you and your whole family if it got a chance![/Troy McClure]
I think I posted about this once before, but I had a roommate in college who believed she was still a virgin because her boyfriend didn’t ejaculate inside her.
I remember the passage, vaguely. It’s been a long time since I read the Bible though. Wasn’t Lilith supposed to be descended from these people?
Anyway, it was the first time I had ever heard someone who actually believed that part of the Bible. Even Bible literalists pick and choose, I’ve found. Oh, and the other thing was, he believed they were still around and walking the Earth.
No – I see two “ghostly finger” images. When I close one eye, one of those goes away and the other turns non-ghostly. When I open it and close the other, the other finger disappears and the one that had disappeared before becomes non-ghostly. It’s very symmetriic.
When I close both eyes, both fingers go away.
My ex girlfriend believed this too. I once insensitively blurted it out when we were in a social situation, and she was embarrassed beyond belief. In the shocked silence that followed my inappropriate remark, another friend remarked:
My aunt (by marriage - I have some stupid people in my family, but not quite this bad) believed that left-handed people where inherently evil and the devil’s wards. She was a school teacher. She was dumb as a brick in many other ways and also a tyrant, but she was older so she was always right.
