The Black Sea’s waters are anoxic, and the sea was heavily traversed since antiquity. So there are lots of amazing shipwrecks on the bottom. Behold the wonders revealedby underwater robots and some clever imaging techniques. The detail is amazing, and some of those ships look like they went down last week, rather than 1,000 years ago.
IIRC, the deep sea environment there is conducive to preservation of such artifacts.
Awesome pics and a fantastic article to boot! Thanks for linking this, lisiate.
The details really are amazing aren’t they?
Aye, but to be honest, I think the article has more interesting details than the images do. Those are awesome, and awe-inspiring, but the info about the ships, the sea and the way they were found is what interests me the most. (I have some background in archeology and anthropology.)
Very cool - thanks for sharing.
