What’s even more messed up is that the little girl could have easily shot someone else’s little kid, mother, or father. The only thing I would add is to say that these high capacity magazine “assault weapons” aren’t fringe anymore either, with much of the increase in popularity coming from the old assault weapon ban, Obama being elected, and attempts at a new assault weapon ban. It’s a common comment among shooters to say that nobody sells more guns than Obama, and for a long while you couldn’t buy a new 6 shot revolver from Smith & Wesson because they were putting all their production resources towards keeping up with demand for M&Ps.
I know a few single issue gun voters. They are single issue voters in that they don’t vote unless that issue is on the table. You are not talking about losing votes you were never going to get anyways, you are talking about people who hardly ever vote suddenly giving a shit.

Obama won by 5 million votes nationwide.
He won by 126 electoral votes. So a swing of 64 electoral votes would have lost him the election.
He won 130 electoral votes with less than 53% of the vote.
He would almost certainly have lost 60 of those electoral votes (Florida, Virginia and Ohio) if he had made this sort of push on guns in his first term.
Elections are frequently determined by the margins. You’re never going to get Ted Nugent’s vote but there are a lot of otherwise non-voting gun owners who will vote Republican or Democratic leaning gun owning voters who will simply not vote or even swing to the Republican side.
Obama got 51.49% of the vote in Colorado. It is conceivable that he would have lost Colorado if he had run on his current gun position in the 2012 election.
