Stupid Gun news of the day (Part 1)

“Third world nation” is an anti dog whistle for “brown people.”

Horse shit. “The third world,” has been an accepted term since 1952 when Alfred Sauvy coined it and it has a specific meaning. If anything, it’s been devolved into a euphemism for, “poor.”

And if you deny that meaning and are claiming there is no difference between Third World countries and the United States, then I’m curious which Third World nation your most anxious to build your summer home in.

Oh do fuck off with that fiction. Third world nation is pretty damned clear in its meaning, and trying to claim it’s racism is just tedious grasping in an attempt to smear people you disagree with.

And yes, I am laughing my tits off at the story of a woman who less than a month ago argued that “My right to protect my child with my gun trumps your fear of my gun” was just shot with her gun by her child. Seriously, it’s like someone tried to create an example of irony so thick even Alanis Morissette could get it.

I am going to guess in the neighborhood of 0.005%. But that number may have to be correlated to how much time any given person carries a gun around or how many they keep in the sideboard. Or whether or not they live north of the 49th, so to speak.

Why deny a historical truth? Gun control has always been a racist enterprise. It’s ways centered around making sure non-white ethnic groups were unable to legally possess arms. Every time one of you lot stammers through a half-assed explanation of why the US should be compared to some lily white Western European country instead of Mexico, you out yourselves. Not too deep down at all, you believe brown people to be violent, uncivilized savages…of course “those people” are violent, right? That’s why we have to compare ourselves to someplace white, uptight, and outtasight…they’re just a better class of people.

Bravo. You have reached the absolute pinnacle of tortured logic. A premise so breathtakingly absurd that you hope to stun your opposition into submission. Do not be surprised if other posters simply stop responding to your comments.

Are there any first or second world nation that is primarily white?

They are basically saying third world nation to mean any nation that doesn’t fit into my narrative. None of the soviet block is third world… by definition, but for the purposes of this debate they are third world.

What I think they really mean by third world is “uncivilized” IOW, they are imposing their standards on the rest of the world and anyone that doesn’t meet their personal standards is not civilized and therefore third world.

Then why not compare murder rates based on gun ownership

Why compare countries based on gun ownership + membership in the “civilized” world

Well, can you show us an example of some country outside the US where more guns has resulted in a more peaceful life for the people? Because it sure as fuck does not look like more guns is making the US a better place.

Truly loving the sheer level of logical gymnastics you’re attempting here in an attempt to ad hominem the other side. It’s a masterclass in gibbering.

Just a question though. If I’m a racist who’s also convinced all non-white people are scary savages, wouldn’t I be the one arguing I need guns to defend myself from said scary savages?

Out of interest can you advise which country you think the US is best compared to? I’m guessing that Afghanistan may have similar levels of gun ownership, or possibly the Islamic State, but that really is pure guesswork as I’m not sure what other country might manage the whole “more guns than people” thing.

Quite honestly, if I come around a corner and see a bunch of people with guns, and some them are Watusis and some are Khmer and some are Tamils and some are Russians and some are honky Americans who look like they could be my neighbors, I trust none of them. Equally. Because six thousand posts in Stupid Gun news of the day has amply reinforced my impression that guns make people stupid. No matter how intelligent a person may be, a gun in hand (over the shoulder, in a holster, in a pocket) always lowers that person’s ability to reason. No matter who they are or where they are from. The racism aspect of it is not evident to me.

Huh, when you put it like that, it makes us sound like we’re doin’ pretty good, considering!

“America…a better place to live than the Islamic State.”

Some say guns made America a better place in 1776 and Germany in 1945 and Koreatown Los Angeles in 1992.

Its hard to find a country with MORE guns per capita than America but countries like Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Switzerland have about 1/3 of America’s guns and they are far less violent than countries with much lower gun ownership rates. This includes virtually all of Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and the former Soviet bloc.

However if you only limit your analysis to “civilized” nations, your argument holds up pretty well

I don’t think anyone has more guns per capita than America. I don’t think anyone even comes close. And yet our murder rate is below the median. What the gun control folks seem to be saying is that America has a higher murder rate when compared to all the countries that have lower murder rates.

Gun control people generally seem to want to include countries like greece but exclude countries like russia from the calculus and I can’t imagine how Russia is any less civilized than Greece unless you define “civilized” as having less violence than America.

I don’t think guns make people stupid. I think guns can make stupid people more dangerous. I would definitely be more alert if I came around a corner and I saw a band of armed people unless I was heading to a gun range or some other place where people are likely to be congregating with guns.

Mere hoplophobia. Try some exposure therapy.

Psycho.

Guns make people ‘stupid’ in the “when you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail” way. If you’ve got a gun *and *you’re the sort of person looking out for bad guys constantly, your threshold for identifying a “bad guy” will tend to get lower. Such bias is an unfortunate side effect of being human.

#notallgunowners etc etc

Thats the problem with red staters, they see Somalia with its low tax rate and easy access to guns and they all think it sounds pretty good. When I hear about a terrorist blowing themselves up while making a bomb or a nutter like this one getting shot with her own gun, I laugh, deal with it.
