I think they’re suffering enough.
Thoughts&Prayers. . . . Next!
“Wasn’t it God’s plan that she got shot in the first place?”
So, the penalty for recklessly endangering your children and indirectly causing one of them to die should be to feel real bad about it?
Yep. If by “feel real bad about it” you mean “totally destroy their lives.”
It was an accident, not intentional. There’s little the courts can do to punish the parents further, and there’s no likely rehabilitation since the parents recently learned to change their ways in the most devastating way possible.
There’s not even any point in making an example of them–that was accomplished when the brother killed the sister. That their own child might die is a far more worrisome deterrent to others than whatever fine or brief jail time might be incurred.
Bullshit!!
That gun did not accidentally fall into the glove compartment, and it did not accidentally load itself, and it was not accidentally left unsecured.
edited to add: Is it an accident when a drunk driver kills innocent people?
Sure you used enough exclamation points?
You might want to look up accident. Nobody intended for the girl to be shot.
Were the parents negligent? Sure. But there’s no point in punishing them further. It doesn’t hurt them more than they’ve been hurt, it doesn’t help the victim or society, and it doesn’t even send a useful message.
Pretty sure you are wrong about that point. It sends a message that may prevent a future ‘accident’.
And now for hypothetical. Would they have ‘suffered enough’ if their son had shot and killed someone else’s kid? If not, why?
It would send a message that these fake “accidents” will no longer be tolerated just because they involve the use of a gun.
A stronger message than Your child will die?
Ah, so it’s just the gun thing that’s got you all het up. Kids die by guns, cars, insecticides, electricity, drowning, and falls all the time due to parental negligence. Are all of those fake “accidents” too?
Just the ones due to criminal negligence.
DAs, courts, and juries frequently find that the parents in such cases have suffered sufficiently and decline to punish them further.
Thoughts and prayers.
Hardly.
So that maybe the next idiot wont have to actually bury a kid to get that painfully obvious message.
Not a bad haul – $30,000.
Where was the intent for her *not *to be shot?
Then it wasn’t a fucking accident.
Don’t we keep hearing the gunstrokers tell us how they support better mental health treatment, and keeping guns away from the mentally ill? Then they ought to be slobbering all over the new Red Flag Law in Colorado that does just that, oughtn’t they? Well, we ought to know better than to expect that, and we do.
But will they ever quit lying about mental health? We know that too, don’t we?
Kinda dumb. How will you know that you have confiscated all this person’s weapons? Sure, if they are sane and law-abiding, maybe, but then they aren’t much of a problem anyway. And if they really are a potential threat, whoever turned them in is at the top of this shit/hit list.
The old “If the law doesn’t completely solve the problem it is bad” ploy?
