It’s been decades since I had a 1911-style pistol. But I was never too concerned about a muzzle-down drop. After all, where is the barrel pointed when it fires? It’s the muzzle sorta upward drops that shoot people. Whether the gun handler themselves or bystanders.
Accidental discharges are always a bad thing. But some are badder than others.

I’m of multiple minds, similar to @LSLGuy. The cite says that the domestic dispute “got physical”. That covers a wide range, none of it good mind you. But all my instincts scream at the simple issue of an 11-year old having unfettered access to a firearm. Unless the mother was at fear of her life, and left instructions to “save her” in these sort of circumstances (which is hellish in yet another way!), this is extremely foolish or careless.
No matter if it ends up as some sort of justified “defense of self or others” that’s a hell of a burden placed on an 11-year old that will be part of his life forever.

Really, it happened Sunday morning in a small media market, it was going to take a couple hours to spread.
This guy didn’t merely forget to wash his hands after using the bathroom, he forgot his gun in there when he left. Now, the gun is missing.
Oh yeah, this happened in a school.
I dunno, I’d imagine if you have to remove your gun from its holster when using the men’s room, you’re wearing the wrong holster. Or wearing it wrong.

My wife asked me to teach her how to shoot about 6 months ago. I did table top lessons 4 times before even going to the range.
Safety. Safety. Safety. That is YOUR responsibility. The gun is YOUR responsibility. This is a drill and you will never forget it.
I did not want to instill fear. Not at all. It’s focus.

This one is being held up as how important the “good guys with guns” are all over media right now because someone else had a gun and also opened fire. The “good guy” decided to train on guns after another mass shooting in the area. Hopefully more good guys train after this shooting. Eventually, we’ll have everyone with guns and it will be fantastic!

My wife asked me to teach her how to shoot. I’ve been a target shooter since I was 12.
We did three table top lessons focused on safety. Lots of questions from me. Then I took her to three gun stores where I let her do most of the talking as far as what would be best for her.
Then to the range. She rented a few different guns to try them out. I also have guns she can shoot.
She bought one. I also bought two that would work for her.
Then we both signed up for professional conceled carry lessons. The only way you can get more pro training is to have your CCW. Make NO mistake, we do not intend to carry at all.
My wife has since taken a defensive handgun class. She wants to get private training though this group. The are very good. And don’t you dare break one of the safety rules. They watch you like hawks.
The guns at home are in a safe/s.
Both my wife and I feel it’s better to have/know it, than to not have it and be clueless, and need to know.
We target shoot twice a month. It’s frankly, fun. And it keeps us on top of them, not the other way around.
My BIL and SIL where just here. They have two handguns and where not sure of the manufacturer of them. SIL said “maybe we should go to the range sometime”
