ICE officer shoots US Marshall while breaking suspect’s car window with his weapon.
According to CNN, investigators believe an ICE officer approached the suspect’s car and smashed the window with their service weapon. CNN’s source reported that it is believed the agent’s weapon discharged while they attempted to grab the suspect, striking both the suspect and a deputy U.S. Marshal.
I 100% agree that she shouldn’t have been killed for trying to open the wrong door because she mistook the address. But the article shows an investigation is being done, so I wouldn’t agree (yet) with the clause “killing a brown person for free”.
Though I also 100% agree that if it was a 32 year old white lady attempting to open the door on accident that it wouldn’t have ended up like this, so the inherent racism/profiling should still be absolutely condemned.
Lol you know nothing is going to happen to the shooter. “Self protection” and Castle Doctrine and all that. I am sure they will tearfully claim they were fearful for their lives in court and then hand out high fives on the way home.
This is Indiana, they’ll probably get a parade, a seat in the state Senate, and a show on Fox News.
Now, seriously, I still think Zoobi is more-or-less correct at the outcomes - they’ll plead worry for their safety, the tears will come out, and play upon the jury, if they don’t (like the others mentioned in the article) comp to a far lesser crime than manslaughter.
I just think it’s worthwhile to note that 20+ years ago, this wouldn’t have gotten even an investigation most likely, and 10 years ago, the investigation would have been cursory at best and then dropped.
And I’m NOT discounting how many such shootings STILL go unreported or accepted as a “necessary” loss. But tiny bits of improvement, despite MAGA posturing that we’re living in a constant war zone is a sign things may improve if we manage to avoid out-and-out fascism/autocracy in the next decade.
Well, of course his (the shooter’s) lawyer is going to say that. What I find worse is the shooter’s own words quoted in the article:
He fired one shot toward the door. He said the door never opened and he didn’t announce himself or say anything before he pulled the trigger.
When told he had killed Rios, he put his head down on the table and said he didn’t mean for anything to happen to anybody.
By his own admission he was unaware of what was actually going on, shot through the door and had NO idea of what was out there. He could have been shooting a cop doing a wellness check, or anyone ELSE that was in the path of the bullet at that moment. And if he DIDN’T mean to hurt someone, he broke one of the cardinal rules of defensive shooting - only shoot if you’re intending to knowingly kill and have judged it a reasonable thread.
He had no idea what he was doing, and that’s why I want him hit with the appropriate felony.
“Mr. Andersen’s actions must be evaluated based on the circumstances as he perceived them,” Relford said in the statement.
Given that never in this lawyer’s lifetime the standard has never not been as he a reasonable person would perceive them this lawyer needs to be sanctioned.
Ah yes… another exhibit in the debate about “appendix carry”.
(Form of concealed carry where an inside-the-waistband holster is clipped in at the 1 or 11 o’clock position. Pros: more quickly reachable even sitting down, comfortable if properly fitted. Cons: when you holster or draw, the barrel can wind up pointing at the femoral artery or at the most valuable players. So, you have to really pay attention to how you’re handling it.)
