You know when you have popcorn ceilings, and you’re painting a wall with a roller, and you get distracted for a nanosecond, and you leave a little roller smudge of paint on your popcorn ceiling? How the hell can you get rid of that?
And yes, I hate popcorn ceilings too. Ugh. But I can’t get rid of it altogether.
Well, acetone removes even dried paint rather well (let it soak for a minute though, if dried - use a rag or something like that). Even water might work, depending on the type of the paint.
Also, I always put tape over edges like that and simply remove it when the painting is done.
Home Depot and Lowes sells paint remover specifically for that purpose- comes in gallons, pints, etc., and is located in the paint section. If I had my can handy, I’d tell you exactly what the name of it is… something kind of cutesy, like “no-spot” or something.
Not that I ever, ever get paint on the ceiling. I just like to have it, in case.
The easiest way I’ve found is to just paint over it. My popcorn ceilings are white and I’ve found that just about any white will do. Even if the white doesn’t exactly match it’s not noticeable.
This is exactly what I did - I had a little sponge brush and a plastic cup of ceiling white paint. I dabbed over the offending spots, including some that were deep garnet. All soon disappeared.
Huh. Many thanks, all. I’ll investigate the “no spot” stuff. I had considered buying a flat white spray paint (perhaps a primer,) masking the wall with a piece of cardboard, and spritzing the offending smudge. Think that’d work?
Be careful if you think the ceiling was never painted or painted with only one coat of cheap paint. I’ve had the texture dissolve if I’ve gotten it too wet. I vote for the sponge painting.
Project report for the class: I obtained a can of Krylon flat white spray primer, masked the wall by holding up a (n empty) file folder, and spritzed conservatively. I repeated about an hour later. Worked like a charm. No more smudges.
Got here late, but FYI, there is a specific product designed for covering stains on popcorn ceilings and lay-in ceiling tiles (like in an office building). I forget the brand name (sorry), but it’s a flat-white spray paint that sprays UP, instead of down or sideways like standard paint. It’s quite a bit easier to use.
