Stupid Russian idea of the day

With so much stupidity coming out of Russia, mostly from their equivalents of Tucker Carlson, but also other Putin allies and their equivalents of Empty Greene, I thought I’d start a thread. First up…

Yeah, right. Directly attack NATO. That’ll turn out well.

Blowing up a volcano sounds like something an Evil Villain from a spy movie would do.

Though the link is a current article, Konstantin Sivkov has been floating the idea since at least 2015. (Interesting that that article was published on April 1st.)

I’m sure USSTRATCOM would clearly discern this as an attack at a huge natural feature, and not an attack on the substantial and strategically important nuclear missile fields a short distance away. Or care about the distinction.

I’m amazed people can be ao stupid that they’d publicly advocate for their own extinction.

That is often the case with death cults, sadly.

This would hardly be just an attack on the USA. But an attack on the world. The Yellowstone caldera is much more than a ‘volcano’.

IF (a big if I think) that that was released, the world would retreat to pre-industrial society. The USA would of course get hit hardest. The Northern hemisphere would suffer for decades.

Getting into serious hijack territory, but … could a direct nuke strike actually trigger an eruption of the caldera?

IANAG, but it seems just as likely that it would disperse the pressure and make it less threatening, and most likely of all that it would do pretty much nothing.

It’s not one of your rank and file “volcanoes”. It is a super volcano whose last three eruptions were over one thousand times more powerful than Mount St. Helens. It would cause huge problems nation wide.

Well yes – if it erupted. My question is, could a nuke trigger an eruption?

According to this very detailed article, NO.

That’s what I figured. Whoever came up with this brainstorm has probably watched 2012 too many times.

Thanks for the research!

I wonder if anyone in Hollywood (or the Russian equivalent) is looking at this for the plot of a disaster film.

That’s why it’s in the Stupid Russian idea of the day.

Or Van Helsing.

Maybe Russia figures that it’s high time for the US to be the one overrun by vampires for once.

Then part of Poland will be Russian, and they will want to push those borders back.
Does a demilitarized zone do anything for you in the 21st century?

A DMZ slows down the enemy’s army.

And as to part of Poland becoming Russian - not really. The idea is to have sacrificial land and population there that Russia controls, but doesn’t care about the welfare of. They’re just captive cannon fodder to sponge up a bunch of the invader’s time, munitions, and attention before said enemy can reach the Motherland.

c.f. Warsaw Pact. All those countries were simply a large version of a hostage taker’s human shields.

Konstantin Sivkov sounds like the name of an evil villain from a spy movie.

Wait, was that why Captain Ramius wanted to see Wyoming?

I think it was Vasili who wanted to see Montana.

As long as we keep Ensign Chekov away from the nucular wessels we’ll be fine.
