I thought the airlines were hurting so they would offer cheaper prices…
so why oh why would it cost me $1000 per person to go to France in June…
I want to go, I have to go, one of my best friend is getting married, ohhhhhhhh I am desperate…
The cheapest fare I found on the web it 900 bucks!
How can they expect people to travel more…
I am sad… this day sucks. And the whole freaking week is dragging…
Many years ago, when Albert Einstein was working on his theory of general relativity, he was up very late one night and fell asleep at his desk. Perhaps he was just dreaming, or perhaps this actually happened, but he was visited by God Himself.
God said, “Al,” (see, they were on friendly terms) “Al, I’m here to help you. I’ll answer any question you have. Anything at all.”
Einstein said, “Well, God, I really need some help. I’m working on this here theory of relativity, and it’s tough. Can you shed any light on this?” You see, Einstein was a bit of a joker, too.
God said, “Sit lux,” as a joke, and they both had a good laugh, and then He said “That’s a pretty tough question indeed. Of course, I’m omnipotent and omniscient, but, y’know, is there something a little easier you’d like me to answer for you?”
Einstein thought for a moment, and said “Definitely. Can you explain the logic behind airline fares to me?”
As a travel agent, let me explain.
Airlines operate on their own system of time and space. They care nothing for our piddly ideals of supply and demand. The fact is, they don’t care. They will charge what ever they feel like. And then they will tax you on all of it!
Try going to Paris, and taking a train to the final destination. MY father lives in Nice and airfair there was $1000 round trip. Instead I went to Paris for about $500, and took the TGV down (5 hrs) for $60 bucks.
January is a little early to buy tickets for June. Keep shopping, wait around for fare sales, play around with the dates and cities, check with a real live travel agent, etc., and it’s a good bet that someone will offer a better fare sooner or later.
Thanks all the suggestions!
I need to go to Paris this time, when usually I fly to Lyon.
I should check maybe another city departure… instead of Boston.
I know the June season is expensive but I have a wedding so I “need” to be there for June 21st.
I will shop around longer, it can’t cost too much more than I see now!
I flight in France pretty often (it is “home” to me) and never saw so high prices. Even if it is never “cheap” in the summers.
swingchick, can’t you hook me up with some discount fares?!
What I don’t understand is why the airlines don’t just do this:
cost to fly from point A to point B
number of passengers they can carry from point A to point B
#1/#2= cost of the ticket
They would obviously have a built-in fudge factor to cover lack of passengers, unexpected expenses (such as getting re-routed to a different destination, etc…but this crap of determining the cost of the ticket depending on which way the wind is blowing is utter fucking nonsense.
Look in your newspaper’s travel section for discount travel agencies. Boston must have quite a few. They usually place a small ad listing the destinations to which they can sell discount fares. These discounters buy bulk from the airlines and can sell for whatever price they want. You are well advised to wait a bit until they’re trying to get rid of unsold seats.
