In another thread, I did a small hijack and answeredBadtz Maru’s question about a particular submarine game. At least I hope I answered it.
Now I’m wondering. Today I’ve got a very nice Dell computer which I obtained last October. I’d love to find a really good computer game that is like a modern day version of the classic Silent Service game. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Silent Hunter II. I have Silent Hunter (I) and it’s pretty cool. Check out http://www.subsim.com/
I also loved Silent Service. In a way I enjoyed it better than the new games. Newer simulations can be so complex that it takes the fun out of it. But see for yourself. The graphics are great, and the complexity adds realism.
I guess it all depends if you’re looking for action or realism. If realism is your goal, then you might want to check out 688(i) Hunter/Killer. It was developed by a company called Sonalysts that does a lot of work on real subs. I happen to engineer subs for a living, and I’ve heard a lot of real submariners talk about how the game nailed it. I haven’t played it, but I prefer the frag or be fragged games. Amazon has a 3-pack of 688(i) Hunter/Killer, Fleet Command and F/A-18 for 20 bucks.
Silent Service was definitely more action-oriented, but I do like realism in computer sims. The one thing I don’t want in a game is lack of anything beyond just the canned missions. Looks like Silent Hunter fits that bill nicely.
Both Silent Hunter and 688(i) Hunter/Killer look interesting enough from their webpages that I’ll consider them.
