Subversion in "Tell Him" lyrics by Linda Rondstadt

I was listening to this version today, and it strikes me as slightly different in the last two lines.

For the most part, she sings the same version as the Exciters, until the last bit, where instead of “Tell him that you’re never gonna leave him, tell him that you’re always gonna love him,” it sounds like she’s actually singing (only in the last fifteen, ten seconds), “Tell him that you’re never gonna love him, tell him that you’re always gonna leave him.” It does sound more in keeping with what she would sing, but am I imagining this? no lyrics sites say anything about this.

Okay, you made me go and give it a listen.

It sounds this way to me too. Except, is it Linda herself, or some other background vocalist singing this? And is it significant, or just a mistake that they didn’t bother fixing?

Ah-ha. It’s not my favourite Linda Ronstadt version of a song by a long shot, but I’ve always heard what you heard. She switches them around at the end. I thought it was me mixing it up, but I’m right! Ah-ha!

You are not imagining it.

Can’t tell if it’s Linda or a background vocalist, and that is a good question if it’s a mistake or real…it seems way too convenient for it to be a mistake, though…and it just seems like it’s so subtle.

I’m glad I’m not insane though. (Well, not for that…_
