Succession on HBO

And did the rabbit not survive the episode? It wasn’t clear from the second phonecalls, might have been a bit ill.

So perhaps “a little bit of bagel” could hurt. And it was funny hearing Greg asking if he could sue his grandfather (or Greenpeace!) in a “loving” way. (Though I kind of understand his dilemma; he’s been expecting to inherit from his grandfather all his life, so perhaps he’s not prepared for the possibility that he’s going to get nothing.)

Yeah, but the rabbit could be ill and throwing up, and groaning. Not dead. Everyone assumes it was dead, I was just wondering if it was confirmed…

No, I don’t think it was confirmed.

The running byplay and frantic immediacy of every decision in this episode was amazing to watch. I like this show a lot, even if I have to overlook the fact that (despite Kendall’s lip service) “doing something good” is almost never mentioned.

I have the same problem with other shows that make sympathetic characters out of people who are making the world worse (looking at you, Sopranos).

I never felt that The Sopranos ever made sympathetic characters out of any of them murderers. Only Artie and Adriana and they aren’t making the world worse.

He really really wanted the deal to go through, so I think he may have some Stewie cards to play. I guess we’ll find out. He also can go to the DoJ, so that if they take Logan down Kendall is known as the deal maker and looked on favorably by the rest of the board.

Good episode!

I said that the show needed new characters and a more political storyline and it looks like that’s the way it’s going. Mencken could be a really interesting character and now there is the possibility that Shiv ditches Logan and maybe joins Kendall.

I am still confused about the political timeline. In Season 2 Gil Eavis was running for President. What happened with that primary? Presumably he is not the Democratic nominee; otherwise they would have mentioned it.

The gap between Season 2 and 3 is only a few hours. From context clues, it appears to be May of 2020 in a non-COVID universe. They mention that The Raisin is serving out 6 months of a lame duck session (it’s possible to be July 2020 too if you consider Jan 2021 as the end of the term but it doesn’t jibe with all the other hints) and that Super Tuesday has already passed. In theory, this should mean that the Democratic nomination is finalized or close to but the characters are still treating the nominee as a hypothetical for plot reasons.

The RNC convention should be in August of 2020 so they have about 3 months to wheedle the delegates into voting for their chosen nominee.

That’s possible.

If it is May, there would probably be a bunch of primaries in June still left though and you would think the Republicans would want to see how their candidates do with real voters before deciding at the convention. Of course that could still happen.

And what about the President? Wouldn’t he have some say? Presumably he has been winning a lot of delegates in pro forma primaries. It’s a bit strange he has never been on screen.

I almost feel the addition of a Succession Trump is “too soon”. Like it’s all fun and games when they are terrible human beings up until they back Trump ;).

Though it does seem like this is the straw that causes Shiv to jump, while not to Kendall perhaps, but away from Logan. But may give Kendall some gifts in the leaving.

Anyways Kendall really needs a win this season. Or Logan needs to kick the bucket. Because Kendall going after his dad and failing again and again like a Charlie Brown character is going to get old if they set the same scenario up again for next season.

The ballots have already been printed and there’s not enough time to get another candidate onto the ballots. It’s also not clear whether the general public knows the president is not going to run again or only political insiders. There’s also several references in the episode about how nobody at the convention is especially thrilled about the general public picking anything and thus they want to have the front runner pre picked before the general public is given a say.

From context clues, it appears what happened is that ATN made up a fake rumor of the president having memory problems which accidentally happened to be real and thus, the president is a political non-person now due to his senility.

This guy says Succession is pretty close to reality.

I work as a psychotherapist and my specialism is ultra-high net worth individuals.

The television programme Succession, now in its third season, does such a good job of exploring the kinds of toxic excess my clients struggle with that when my wife is watching it I have to leave the room; it just feels like work.

I see family situations like those in Succession all the time.

Man, when I start feeling this way, Kendal does something so irrational and stupid that I realize he will never win at anything more significant than a game of Yahtzee. He just has the absolute worst instincts. I feel like he’s lived his whole life with daddy making all the decisions, that Kendal never had to do or decide anything for himself. So now as an adult, he is just straight-up bad at every decision he makes or action he takes.

And he makes every mis-step with such douchebag flair. “Yo! Yo! Yo!”

Sure, but if Kendall strikes out again and it’s just Kendall trying to find another vector to take down old man Logan next season, well that’s kinda dull. If it’s Shiv & Kendall trying to take down Logan and Roman… well that’s interesting.

Sure, if Shiv can keep him from stepping on his own dick, they might have a chance at taking down Logan. He just doesn’t seem to listen to anyone, and I, for one, am starting to enjoy Charlie Brown falling flat on his ass over and over and over again.

I’m hoping to see Greg take to old goat down. Doesn’t he still have a few of those incriminating papers somewhere?

Highlights from the last couple of episodes.

“Dance of the sugar-plum failure”
“moon on a stick” (a Lee and Herring reference)
Thumbs up from Roman when told he could take his mother’s vagina home with him.

The writing is a constant source of delight for me. It all makes sense as a black comedy when you remember Jesse Armstrong’s previous writing credits.

I must’ve missed so many nods to his previous work but the vicious insults are pure “The Thick of it” and I did note that one character was called “Stefan Strauss” and Armstrong’s production company is called “Project Zeus” (both peep show references)

For those who note that everyone is unlikeable. Yes. Par for the course, you may as well be concerned that “little house on the prairie” contained too much horse and buggy.

Such a sad birthday party. Kendall with the complete lack of self-reflection when he says he doesn’t want this to be an asshole’s birthday party, lol.

I can’t believe there are only two episodes left- each one is better than the last. Roman is pretty much becoming a Logan clone. Glad to see Greg get a little something of his own even if Tom will probably find a way to ruin it. Shiv for a moment was human , you can tell she’s floundering and wondering why she’s doing this. And Kendall - I think Shiv was right that he needs a combination birthday & get well card. He’s a walking disaster… love this show for so many reasons.

Roman is definitely positioned the best right now. Logan respects him for his unwillingness to compromise and just say ‘fuck em’. He’s obviously very close to Gerri. He seems to be gaining authority while Shiv is losing it.

Of course backing the fascist for President may clear the field even more as I think Shiv bolts. Though, it seems Tom would be unwilling to leave Waystar considering he’s not going to jail anymore (most likely), and he’s in Logan’s good graces.
