This is his coverup.
Here’s his explanation
“that’s far more in line with my opinions” leaves it open to “about Celtic supremacy” or some shit. The full quote, “about nature and animals now than my connection to the violence that I partook in when I was a young man,” is really key to understanding what he meant.
Bringing this back because it reminded me of this post:
When you’re openly admitting that mass starvation and atrocities against Gazan civilians are just fine with you, then you must realize that many of us will find your moral disapproval utterly meaningless, right?
Yeah, but, do they have a tattoo?
That doggy doesn’t look very happy.
Okay, first, it’s totenkopf, not totemkopf.
Second, AIUI, totenkopfs don’t have crossbones.
ETA: I’m pretty sure I once saw a rerun of Dennis the Menace where Dennis placed a totenkopf symbol on some kind of DO NOT MESS WITH THIS sign.
Looks a bit Fenrir-ish to me.
I agree. I’m a long way from trusting him. As I said before, he chose wisdom as a dump stat, and I’m not in the habit of supporting politicians who made that choice. His positions and votes and other actions should come under a much higher degree of scrutiny.
But the most common modern hate symbol that politicians wear is an R after their name. We’ve reached the point where the Republican party is 100% a hate group that’s actively engaged in racialized violence in a way that kills people. His opponent might not have a tattoo, but she wears the R, and she actively participates in the violence. The dumbass cosplayer is much preferable to the deliberate member of an active hate group.
I think there is a chance he is not a Nazi, and just a guys who is Very Stupid about a lot of things and hung out in groups with actual Nazis without clocking them.
It doesn’t increase my enthusiasm about him being on the Senate. A guy like that will be limited in what good he can do because of his foolishness, and can be weaponized by the grievance culture people.
That said, I’m not a Mainer. My state has its own problems. I wish them luck with theirs.
But enough about the United States military.
As I have said before, if I were in Maine, I’d go for Andrea LaFlamme in the primary, and rank David Costello second. There is still a primary! And it’s ranked choice! There’s no need to vote for a maybe-Nazi at this stage!
Pretty well summed up IMO.
We tend to forget how many people just are “Very Stupid about a lot of things” even though they may be spot on about a lot of other things. And for how many people being “right” about Specific Things A, B and C overrides and forgives any being wrong about specific things D through Z, and any character issues.
…
Having had to work with Upper New England types for a time, I can fully understand a contrarian populist inclination that would favor someone like Platner. There’s a whole lot of THAT there.
I’ve learned far more about totenkopf’s than I ever wanted to know, including the proper spelling. ![]()
All the Wikipedia examples, practically all image search results, and the German military photo up thread, show the totenkopf as some kind of skull and crossbones with two eyes and a nose. Plats tat is horrendously drawn if it is indeed at totenkopf? To wit, it’s missing a nose, and cross bones look like wings. YMMV.
Is there anyone on these boards that would not want to edit or delete some grate debage comment should they suddenly decide to run for Senate? Or use more neutral or diplomatic language? If take Platner at his word, he had no plans to run for a major office until pretty recently.
Apologies if this has been shared before, but the Totenkopf is literally what this entire sketch is built on:
As Platner’s buddies in the Reddit thread about Totenkopfs linked above pointed out, yeah.
What are the odds he’s such an online guy and never seen the meme? Never noticed these guys have his tattoo on their hats?
(I am asking you rhetorically – pretty sure you will agree with me that they are very low)
Interestingly right wing media (or at least Fox News) seems to be ignoring the issue. They have a couple of hit pieces up about him but it just complains that he is too liberal. Not a single mention of anything nazi related. I suppose its because their target readership would find that as a reason to vote for him.
Or they figure it’s too soon for a full attack to have best effect.
I believe it was rival Governor Mills that played the totenkopf card? At which point, Platner had already cris-crossed Maine campaigning, and appears to be largely a nothing burger. That said, I would expect nothing less than a full throated “Nazi tattoo” offense for the general since that plays better than a “pirate tattoo.” Will see if “Totenkopf” becomes one of the hit words for 2026.
It’s not a pirate tattoo. It was totally a totenkopf, until he covered it up. Not that I’ve ever seen one before this hit the news. But it’s kind of a side or ¾ view of the skull, sitting over what look like parallel bones, not a cross of bones.
Republicans don’t get any advantage over making hay out of this issue now: the best they could hope for is he drops out of the primary, and they run against Mills in the general, which they’re still likely to lose. Much better for them to keep their powder dry until Platner wraps up the nom, then bring it out in the general and hope its enough to sink him, thus letting Collins keep her seat.
