Sudden changes of personalities (UK Eastenders Martin)

Why did Martin suddenly become a bastard? It seems almost overnight. He left prison with a conscience, trying to make up for what he did and make friend with people. Then the new familiy arrived, and SUDDENLY he is a thoughtless and evil bastard without a conscience.

I know it’s only a soap. But it bugs me that they throw away a personality and replace it with another one. Martin was set to replace Mark (his older brother)

This thread will probably take a nose dive

It’s been a few years since I followed EastEnders. What ever happened to Mark? A person with HIV on a low income might not have the greatest survival odds. :-\ Feel free to enclose your reply in a spoiler box.

He moved to the Isle of Man! (where I live)

I agree with ya. Martin turning into a git is one of the stranger things to have happened in Eastenders for a while. I think the moral message is “Look what prison does to young people - it doesn’t make them better people, does it?”

And it’s NOT “just a soap” - it’s of vital importance, okay!

Martin’s so pathetic and not scary as a villain that hopefully the writers will see sense. Either that or he’ll be back in jail. Basically, men in EastEnders have limited options: generally after a few months they’re either villains and hard men (like the bruvvers Mitchell), comic losers (like Gary and Barry), or they’re whiny losers (like Mark and Ian Beale). Martin’s made the right choice.

But my nomination for the crappest bad-lads in soapland still goes to Steve and Tim from Brookside and their lap-dancing robbery.
