Suet cakes-They're for the birds

Anyone else here make their own suet cakes for bird feeders?

I do occasionally. It’s cheap and not too difficult. I get the suet at work, from the big roasts we have for sandwiches. I render it a second time and then mix it with seed and whatever else I have on hand.

The batch I made tonight had suet, birdseed, cheap generic peanut butter, a few dried cherries and dried apples I dehydrated last summer and some ground up orange and lemon peels. You just mix all the stuff in a big bowl and fill the molds. For the latter I use Tupperware sandwich boxes and round hamburger patty molds. I wrap the chilled cakes in the plastic bags my newspapers come in.

It’s a lot cheaper in the long run than buying them ready made.

I hoard my suet for mincemeat tarts. It’s only in the stores around Christmas. Stinkin’ birds don’t get my suet.
