Suffocating a child sleeping in your bed

This a comment on the answer given in the straight dope classic: “What’s the likelihood of suffocating a child sleeping in your bed?”

Cecil replies with a quote from the Bible. I want a real answer. In the last century, did anyone ever accidentally killed their child because they slept in the same bed?

I believe that this does not happen often. I slept with my baby during the first 3 months and everything went fine. I was always aware the baby’s presence. I guess you have to know thyself to be confident to do this. A whole show on this subject was done by Oprah. The expert invited recommended to sleep with the child. Or at least to have the child sleep in the same room.

I don’t have an exact answer for you, but having worked as an EMT for many years now, I have gone on calls where this has happened. The most recent was a drunk father at home with his kids. He fell asleep on the couch with his infant son on his chest and rolled over, suffocating the child. We were not able to revive the infant and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
I’m sure the alcohol had alot to do with this, but it happens. IMO, I think SIDS is often blamed for this, if there is no proof of accidental suffocation.

As does the couch.

Anecdotally it seems the vast majority of cases were there were fatalities from overlying - couches or waterbeds were involved - not standard beds so much. I wonder if there are any hard stats on this?

My daughter didn’t start sleeping in her crib, which was still in my bedroom until she was almost 7 month old. It was great! She’d nurse during the night, as needed - I didn’t have to wake up in the middle of night after the first week. I had planned to sleep her with me and purchased a big thick futon as the “family bed” just to allay any residual concerns I had about the practice. I believe it was much easier being a new mom when I was geting enough sleep.
