Sugar Cane

‘Most people ain’t never ate sugar cane raw today, black or white.’ – Cicely Tyson as ‘Jane Pittman’

Come to think of it, I haven’t eaten raw sugar cane since I was a kid in the single-digits in San Diego. I don’t think I’ve seen it for sale anywhere. Maybe if I’d looked I could have found it in L.A.; but I have a feeling it would be hard to get in the PNW.

I picked one up at the farmer’s market a few weeks ago.

I ate it as a kid growing up in NJ, and had some fresh from the field in Puerto Rico when I visited family as a kid. Had some last year, since the Hispanic market across the street from our house sells it around Christmas time.

While the stuff I had as a kid and since was good, it did not compare to having it cut fresh from the field in Puerto Rico.

Everything since just tasted not as fresh (duh), a bit dried out, and just not as …sweet…fresh…juicy… I don’t know. But that fresh from the field sugar cane is an experience I will never, ever forget. It was wonderful.

Saw a vendor with some at Pike Place Market a few years ago.

It’s available year round in the DC metro area. I think it’s a question of being in the correct market. Well I should say I think it’s available. It’s one of those things when I see it, that makes me want to get it. I rarely seek it out.

My question is other then chewing on it, what do you do with it?
