I’m going to Boston for a conference and will have most of a day off for a walk. I’ve never spent any time at all in the east. I’m interested in seeing unusual historic sites, buildings, graveyards, etc., but not touristy-pilgrim-recreation kind of things. What walk, up to five miles, would take in the most interesting parts of Boston?
I’m afraid most of the historic sites in Boston are tourist spots and vice-versa. It’s what the city’s known for, what with the Revolutionary War and all.
That being said, the obvious answer is The Freedom Trail.
Boston isn’t that big. You can wander around Beacon Hill for a bit then head south to Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market area. From there head west down Boylston or Newberry St or along the Charles River if you prefer checking out the various shops and whatnot until you hit the Fenway area.
Which for all intents and purposes is the Freedom Trail.
This is your answer. It’ll show you the best stuff, and it’s easy to follow.
Thanks; I will investigate the Freedom Trail and the other suggested streets. Are there any Underground Railroad or other early African American landmarks worth seeing?
Try the Black Heritage Trail.
I think I know where the Brink’s Robbery took place, and if you give me some advance notice I might be able to track down the site of the Molasses Flood.
I believe the Molasses Flood is covered on the Freedom Tour. You can get on/off the tour vehicle to visit various sites.
