I can’t seem to get the straight dope on gps software for something like my Treo. There are so many, and the descriptions on Amazon and so on don’t answer all of my questions.
I’d like something reasonably priced (of course) that gives voice directions, traffic updates, and has points of interest.
What the ads don’t say is how these updates are getting to you. Are you using your cell carrier’s data plan? Are updates given regularly, and are they free?
I just got CoPilot 7 Live for my Tytn II; it offers traffic updates via the GPRS/EDGE/3G data network. Basically the program will occasionally hit a website up for traffic info, so it needs an active data connection to do that. Other programs which offer traffic info, such as TomTom, will probably behave similarly.
If you already have a data plan, there shouldn’t be any extra charge for the data unless you go over the plan’s limits. Most plans only charge for data transfer; you can keep a data connection active 24/7, and you won’t be charged when the connection is idle.
I use Route 66 in china on a HTC Touch. It works well in china, and I know they have US maps. Other than that I got nutin
I used to use Route 66, but the version I had supported traffic info only over TMC, which isn’t too useful here in the States. Plus which, they segment their maps by geographic region & you can have only one region loaded at a time. So if you’re planning a long trip, you have to break it up into multiple segments, and manually load a new map when you fall off the edge of the old one.
