I have a week off in January and I am able to go on holiday. It’s just me – the wife and kids are staying at home (but I’m not after a “bachelor” holiday).
So I want to go somewhere in Europe that’s a bit more imaginative than the usual suspects (I’ve been to most of those). There isn’t going to be anywhere with good weather so I’m not bothered about that (in any case I’m English so I’m waterproof)
So where is easy enough to get to, has plenty to do, ie sights ,museums, activities for an old bastard and reasonable (respectable) nightlife (bars restaurants etc)?
Money isn’t really a problem but I don’t want to go mad.
Any suggestions?
(So far my real life mates have suggested Dubrovnik and Budapest. That’s close to the sort of thing I’m after).
They sound like good places to start - others eastern European cities which are up-and-coming tourist hotspots that would fit your description include Ljubljana, Cracow and Tallinn, all of which are also Easyjet routes from London.
San Remo or Torino. You’ll need a guide. I’m available.
(I don’t mean in that way. I mean in that I can speak the language and have been there and would really, really like to go back kind of way. )
GorillaMan has already mentioned Ljubljana, so I’ll just promote it a bit more, Slovenia being my country and all. I won’t go into details what can you see in Ljubljana but I’d like to point out the small size of our country (20,000 square km) and its geographical diversity. There are plenty of day trips you can make while staying in Ljubljana from visiting different natural monuments (karstic caves, lakes tucked in the valley between the Alps …) to a variety of museums (e.g. WW1 museum in Tolmin), ski-resorts and so on. There’s quite a lot of beautiful architecture too (Plecnik) and so on. If you’re interested, feel free to ask some more and I can provide you with appropriate links.
Have you already been to the southernmost part of Spain? The city of Cadiz is pretty interesting, then working your way east you can visit Tarifa, Gibraltar, Nerja, Ronda, and even up to Granada to see the Alhambra. Spain is spectacular
in its culture and people. Take a ferry or hydrofoil over to Tangier for a different (albeit somewhat tacky and definitely tourist-y) look at an African port city.
But all those other places sound great, too. Jealous of you .
Just a thought being January, even the top touristy spots will be quite quiet and easy to get arround. Maybe go the Paris an Amsterdam which will still be open, but won’t be tourist hells this time of year. Or perhapse head to the Greek Islands for the historical sites whilst the sun worshipers are away. A bit further affielsd Morocco probably has decent whether even in January (yahoo weather says Marakesh (sp?) avarages 64 F during January and has a third of the rain in SE England at that time of year)
