Suggestion for new subform - current events/breaking news

I respectfully suggest a “current events/breaking news” forum. When some news story breaks it’s not at all clear whether it should be discussed in the pit, MPSIMS, IMHO, GD, or even elections.

Thanks!

I think this is a great idea. It would help keep “Elections” from getting all muddied up every time a politician does something controversial.

We could always plan to revisit the need in, say, three and half years or so . . .

What a wonderful idea. Let’s add a few more forums, too, for things like Celebrities (that way Cafe Society won’t be overtaken by celebrity news), and Mathematics (that way, General Questions won’t get overwhelmed by all the Mathematics threads, which we know are a constant irritant to the non-mathy  ).

I remember when three forums was enough, IIRC.

Breaking news goes in MPSIMS. Is that not working? There’s a thread in there right now where folks are updating stuff related to the Las Vegas shooting.

That is, if all you want to do is follow the “breaking news”, post in ATMB. If you want to discuss some specific aspect of the news, then there are other forums for that.

I don’t think that’s well known. I certainly didn’t know it, and nothing on the front page indicates it (that I can see). And of course for things like mass shootings, there’s a logical urge to put them in the pit.

Add it to the description of MPSIMS then. I don’t agree with more forums. As this board gradually winds down the last thing it needs is to be diluted by more and more forums. I still think Games and Cafe Society should be together.

Is there any way we could change the name of “Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share”? No one remembers who started the joke, and It’s gotten very very old. You are driving off new members who might want to post threads like “My wife has breast cancer” or “60 dead in mass shooting” by telling them their threads are mundane and pointless.

This subject comes up every time there’s a major news event with quickly-changing information that affects a lot of people. That is to say, once a month or so. And there’s the problem – “Breaking News” threads of any considerable magnitude are just too rare to warrant their own forum. And what if the Las Vegas thread is still active six weeks from now – it’s no longer “breaking news”, so should it be moved to another forum? No, the current situation of using MPSIMS for these threads is working just fine; it’s not like any other topics are getting crowded out.

The Game Room sure became a ghost town quickly after Thread Games was spun off…

I forgot that even happened. My eyes just glide over that forum.

Why would that be required if as the OP suggests the new forum be for breaking news AND current events?

In any case, I also didn’t know that MPSIMS was the designated forum for that. If that’s really the case, I agree that MPSIMS needs a new name.

I always think of that as the forum where people share personal information, whether good or bad, not things of public interest.

Just change the name to “Things I Must Share”, problem solved.

What we need is a subforum for ATMB called “Suggestions that will be ignored by TPTB.”
