Suggestion: let's fix my earlier terrible suggestion

Your place in this was also cool, Giraffe. Your original idea was a good one, but it turned out to be a touch annoying. But now the kinks seemed to be worked out in large part to this thread. Good job.

I would tell xash he kicks ass, too, but that’s been a given for a while.

Please, please, please put it back to 0 again. The new problems were with *nested *quotes, not multiquotes. With the current settings, anyone who selects more than five posts to quote has the other ones dropped, with absolutely no warning.

For example: I catch up on a thread that has had a lot of activity since the last time I posted. I find several people who either replied to me or made points that I’d like to respond to. I select seven posts and hit quote. When I get to the composition window, and suddenly the first two posts I selected aren’t there. Now I have to try to remember where in the thread they were, scroll back down, and manually copy-paste them so I can quote them and respond.

AFAIK, there has been *no problem *with people multiquoting multiple posts. Any post they’re multiquoting is one they intend to reply to–which can result in big ol’ wall o’ text posts, but potentially with valid contributions. Contrast this with *nested *quotes, where each layer of nesting is only repeating something that someone else has said before. IMO, it makes sense to limit nesting quotes, but *not *to limit the number of posts someone can multiquote.

Since I started this mess, I’ll clean it up. We forgot to set it back. Have reset it to 20. Hopefully no one needs more than 20 multi-quotes.

You’re probably right, but any reason not to simply put it back at 0, i.e. unlimited? We’ve never had a problem with this setting in the past.

I must protest against this automatic selection of a multiple of 10 for default settings. I ask that it be a prime number, like 17, 19, or 23. Using prime numbers makes you look smart - when the next person sees the maximum multi-quoting allowed is 23, they will think to themselves “that guy must have known something I didn’t, I’d better leave it at 23”. If you see 20, you think “they obviously chose a number with no scientific basis to justify it.”

Now serving waffles at SDMB.

Thanks for this, xash, but like **Giraffe **said, why can’t it be back at unlimited? It’s never been an issue.

Part of the problem I was running into, too, was residual multiquotes from other threads, which do count against the total. So if I end up with 10 multiquotes from other threads that the board thinks I didn’t use, then select 11 in a new thread, the board is going to drop one of those.

The biggest problem with the limit is that there is no mechanism to warn you when you’ve reached it. You can keep toggling posts; the earlier ones just won’t show up.
