Suggestions for landscape design software?

I have roughly one-third of an acre that I need to landscape. I’m looking for recommendations for software that would help me work on the plans. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m interested in this too.

My friend who’s a garden designer uses sketchup - the basic version is free, and you can get plug ins for 3D objects like plants.

I’ve played around with it and it isn’t too complicated once you get your head into it.

I will check into that, thank you. It looks like it has options that might work. I admit that I’m afraid it might be too advanced, but I notice there’s a school version that might have a shorter learning curve.

Ideally, I’d like something that held my hand a bit, in terms of allowing types of plants to be inserted, with heights, flowering info, and so on, so I could see what things would look like from different perspectives at different times of year. I don’t know if that exists.

Another place to get user opinions about landscape design software is GardenWeb, where the question has been asked numerous times and you can find threads on the subject or start another.

I have never used anything more sophisticated than graph paper and pencil.
