Buying Halloween candy seems to be a crap shoot- either you buy too much, or not enough. I bought 2 150 piece bags of Halloween candy expecting a big turn out. I had 11 trick or treaters, when last year there were close to 200.
I’m stuck with all this candy- so for those in the same boat, how do you get rid of it (besides eating it, of course). Do you donate it anywhere? I don’t have a ‘community candy bowl’ at work since there are only 3 of us here, and one is a diabetic.
Last year my friend started collecting left-over candy from our local Facebook group which is full of parents. She donated over 150 lbs. to the USO. We’re doing it again this year!
**
Tremblay** you are in Cleveland, no? The USO office my friend goes to for donating is at the airport “On the baggage claim level by carousel number 1.” Here’s a list of other offices and how to contact everyone.
Drop it off at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen?
The next time anyone comes to your door, give them candy. Act confused, ask them about their “costume”, etc.
There’s a dentist in our neighborhood who’s paying $1/lb for leftover Halloween candy. They will be shipping it all off to troops overseas.
Thank you for the suggestions! Haha Kayaker- I was thinking of also saving it for my niece and nephew’s Easter basket and seeing if they notice. Quite some time though til Easter.
Sara- That was my original thought
I know some local churches often give free meals, and this might be a nice treat to contribute.
Yes, Zipper, I’m a native Clevelander. I’ve heard about donating to the troops, but wasn’t exactly sure how to go about doing so. I appreciate the link
Suburban- good idea! I did a google search to see if there are any local dentist offices nearby that participate; unfortunately, they are quite the drive away
I may follow-up with finding an organization sending it to the troops!
We have drop-off points for our collection all over northern Summit county as well as Brecksville, North Royalton and Solon. So if you want to leave it with us (our collectors just have bins outside their houses) and not deal with the USO, send me a PM and I’ll give you an address
This is why you should always select a type of candy that you personally like–so you can eat it yourself over the next few months.
But, can’t you take unopened packages back to the store?
“Get that out of the house!” said my wife as she was eating it.
“Don’t bring that in here!” said my office mates as they finished it.
I took the leftover chocolate bars to work yesterday and put them in a bowl on a side-table in the library. About half of it was gone as of COB today.
As soon as all the trick-or-treaters are gone, I take my leftovers to the poor teenagers who are stuck working Halloween night at the pizza place down the street. I need to have it out of my house as soon as possible, and they love it.
