My intent was that the metahuman was the one causing the allergic reaction, not the tree. In any case, unintended consequences move the story along.

No worries; I figured that was what you meant. The unintended consequences you mentioned can help affect the plot. Does the metahuman who can trigger anaphylaxis have to wear some sort of containment suit to avoid falling victim to his own power? This is interesting character origin material.
Some sort of a control over structures - ability to melt and reshape concrete, etc. The person can melt away roads, bridges, dams, mine shafts etc. Makes it really expensive to maintain and create.
Consequences being flooding, lack of supplies to remote areas, etc.
