I was sitting at my computer, about 3:20am, when I heard a sound, then a thump, & an oof. Went to the window, it took a moment recognize the body. I called 911, and was put on hold for about moment.
The whole thing is weird. It’s the second suicide this year where a guy jumped from the fire escape.
Maybe he really needed to end his life, in order to end the misery of himself and a lot of other people. Death is not always a bad thing. He made his call, it’s not ours to second guess.
Right, because of the storied history of suicide bringing relief to loved ones.
Of course it’s our call to second-guess. This is the SDMB. Maybe there was a rational reason for a given suicide, but the 3am timeline indicates otherwise.
Damn dude that’s hard. My cousin was a fire alarm technician in Houston and he saw a guy jump from the top floor of an atrium all the way down to the first floor on the inside of the building he was working on. The guy landed on the stairs in the bottom of the atrium and sort of liquefied on impact. It didn’t affect him at the time but a few years later he started getting nightmares from it. I’m not sure that people’s minds are prepared to see that kind of thing, at least mine wouldn’t be. Don’t be afraid need to talk to somebody over it there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Peace be with you, jtur88
Unlike death by accident or illness, which leaves loved ones feeling happy and energized </sarcasm>? Presumably this person felt he was doing the best thing.
My boss was at a wedding rehearsal party on the roof a high rise. A well dressed guy showed up, made his way over to the edge, and jumped. He said it happened so fast that nobody even had much time to react until he was gone. DFW area, FWIW.
I did miss that the OP said 3:20 am. Still, I probably would have assumed a drunken stumble - but there were apparently witnesses, so I’m sure it’s just me.
I had a weird dream last night where I was talking to two co-workers and we wanted to be discreet so we stepped outside - except the door took us outside onto a fairly wide but 3rd floor ledge with no railing. We continued talking until one of them stepped back to far and fell off and was killed. Weird.
I once heard a gunshot that turned out to be a suicide shot, many years ago.
There was a house around the corner from mine, the corners of our yards didn’t quite touch. Late one night, in the winter, I heard a bang. For just a moment there was quiet, then I heard a guy yelling “Damn, why did you have to DO that?” with a crying sound in his voice. Fairly soon the cops showed up and I could see, in the lights set up, a figure on the ground, partly obscured by a drift of snow. I closed the curtains and didn’t want to see any more.
