Suicide Squad. Why all the early hate?

By the way, the rap sheets in the movie showed Deadshot and Harley as being from Gotham, New Jersey. Was this simply tailored for NJ audiences, or is Gotham supposed to be in NJ?

It’s canon. There was a atlas published by DC a few years back which showed that Gotham is in New Jersey (and Metropolis is in Delaware).

Thanks. Are there direct references to NJ in any other movies? All my knowledge is from the tv show with Adam West.

I’ve never read any of the comics. Hell, before the trailers started showing up I’d never even heard of Suicide Squad. And for the record, the entirety of my lifetime comic book reading is:

A few old Disney comics in my dad’s board game closet that I’d read when bored on weekend visits.
Two issues of New Teen Titans in about 1987
One issue of Transformers in about 1986

And yet I’ve enjoyed many comic book movies over the years. This one I’d be hard-pressed to give a 3 out of 10. The only redemption is the charisma of Will Smith in a boring character, Margot Robbie in a troubling character, and Viola Davis in an actually interesting but barely there character.

If those count then RED is a much better DC movie than this.

Oh HELL no. The Dark Knight is so much better than this movie it’s practically in another dimension.

Out of the 5, the third Tobey Macguire and second Andrew Garfield are the ones better left unfilmed. The first Garfield, while not good, was watchable, and IMNSHO better than Iron Man III and Thor II and anything Fantastic Four.

Also The Losers (2010), which I rather enjoyed despite how bad Jason Patric was.

You bring up Ghost Rider 2 and not Ghost Rider? The only good things one can say about Ghost Rider are it is better than Ghost Rider 2 and Eva Mendes.

OK, I’ll give you that, even tho I didnt care for all the dark & gritty. And Heath Ledger kinda ruined The Joker ever since, as witness this film.

So, I guess coming within a hundred miles of Caesar Romero’s quality was out of the question?

I have a soft spot for that series, but don’t oversell it. It had some rather good characterization work, and a pretty cool series of artists. Also a few jaw-dropping bloodbaths.

Must disagree:

a. Amanda Waller, an overweight black female lead in a DC comic? Ground-breaking;
b. The previously lame and laughable Captain Boomerang as a real shit of a human being;
c. Rick Flag’s suicide driven by post-traumatic stress (much like that of the Goodwin/Simonson Manhunter, but without the world-weariness);
d. Deadshot as detached to the point of being schizoid;
e. The concept that characters actually die in super hero comics. There was no expectation of resurrection for any of them.

I suspect it was because Ostrander was an outsider: aside from Grimjack, he had no prior experience in the industry and wasn’t tainted by its foibles.

I just read the plot summary on wikipedia. So what’s all this nonsense about Superman being dead?

Thats how the film starts. Otherwise, why have a Ssquad at all?

Oh, I dont really count the 2 RED films as DC, but yeah they are quite good, especially #1.

This movie takes place immediately after Batman vs. Superman, and that’s how it ends.

Warning: don’t read the above spoiler if you don’t want to know how Batman v. Superman ends.

Ehhh, sort of. The Atlas of the DC Universe was published by Mayfair Games as a supplement to their DC Heroes Role-Playing Game, and it was approved by DC. But (like all of Mayfair’s original material for the DCHRPG) not considered canon as far as the comics are concerned.

Having worked as much as I have in and around government, a overweight black woman government worker is about as cliché as you can get.
