There’s a valid reason for it, though, at least in my case. There are some actors or actresses who have done things in their real lives that were reported in the media to such an extent that it makes it hard for me to suspend my disbelief and see the character rather than the actor. And I do judge a movie based on its ability to draw me in.
For example, I can’t watch Tom Cruise on screen anymore and think “fighter pilot” or “secret agent”. Instead I think “Scientologist in a plane” or"scientologist in a black turtleneck". It takes away from the movie. Mel Gibson produces a similar effect.
