People often claim that Hollywood is controlled by Jews. If this is really true, how do these boneheads explain the fact that Mel Gibson is still producing, directing and starring in major films?
I wasn’t sure where to put this because it’s as much a question about the psychology and justification of conspiracy theorists as it is about movies, but I figured I’d put it here. Mel Gibson has a new film coming out, an action thriller that actually looks pretty good, from the previews I’ve seen of it. He did Apocalypto, which was quite popular and also, cinematically, a good movie that obviously had a large budget. The guy seems to be doing well for himself.
Gibson has made much-publicized anti-Semitic comments. Everyone is aware of this.
So, if “the Jews control Hollywood,” how is it that he still has a career? Has anyone posed this question to the Jew-conspiracy nuts?
It’s obvious. If the Jews destroyed Mel Gibson’s career, it would be tantamount to admitting they controlled Hollywood. Instead they just make sure he only has parts in horrible, horrible movies, so it will appear he destroys his own career.
The Jews don’t control Hollywood-- money controls Hollywood. As long as Mel Gibson makes movies that make money (and doesn’t actually kill anyone in the process), he’ll have work, even from Hollywood Jews.
Ahhh, capitalism-- show someone enough green, and they forget you’re black (or white, red, yellow, etc.).
That’s easy. You need a Mel Gibson so that you can say, “Of course the Jews don’t control Hollywood: look at Mel Gibson.”
But now that I’ve told you that, just watch out for a couple of ugly guys wearing kippah looking for you – they just want to give you a friendly warning.
His next movie is called “The Beaver”. It’s about a guy (Gibson) who walks around with a beaver puppet on his arm, and talks to it like it’s a real beaver. I’m not sure that’s a ringing endorsement of the OP’s argument…
Like everybody else said, money. But the other element you are overlooking is that he’s been making his own films. He wrote, produced, directed, and distributed Passion of the Christ by himself and through his own company. He did the whole thing, effectively, by himself. Whoever controls Hollywood did not employ him. They didn’t want to touch him or the subject matter of that movie. Apocalypto was pretty much the same deal, although Disney did some of the distribution.
So it’s not like people were beating down his door to star in movies, or direct them. He made movies on his own. And he hasn’t done much acting in recent years either.
Because he created one for himself. I think that’s true whether you’re an anti-Semitic conspiracy nut or not. And I never liked the guy even before it became clear he was a giant jackass.
On the other hand, Mel hasn’t had a movie role since 2006 DUI incident (other than Who Killed the Electric Car?). Maybe, after nearly 4 years, he’s begged and pleaded with the Jews to let him back in?
I was so shocked, I looked it up, and apparently this screenplay was on a list for “Best Unproduced Screenplays”. I’m trying to imagine in what universe this can possibly be good. Apparently Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell have both been signed on to play the role and turned it down. Weird.
I love “talks to it like it’s a real beaver.” Am I the only one here who doesn’t usually talk to beavers? I don’t have a clue how one is supposed to address them.
