What is the best ice cream?
IMHO it is THRIFTY ice cream (now owned by RiteAid) that is sold on the West Coast. Their French Vanilla is amazing. I have sent transplanted New Yorkers and Europeans to try it and they all agree.
How often do you go to movie theaters?
I went to my new local cineplex today to see Spiderman (so-so…wait for video) and was amazed at the huge line to get tickets. How often do you go to the movie theater to see a film?
I go about once a month - next on the list is Minority Report.
Just lazy summer questions…but it was 110 degrees in my backyard today and these questions seemed oddly relevant.
My favorite ice cream is Breyers strawberry. I love the chunks of frozen strawberries in there.
I don’t ever see movies often. To me, it’s just so expensive. We have a family of four, so it costs us about fifty dollars by the time we’re finished with popcorn candy and soda. I would rather wait for it to come out on video and spend the fifty dollars on a carnival or something else fun.
OK… I know this is mean because nobody outside the Portland/Vancouver area can eat here… but it is all the more reason why you should come visit The 'Couv someday. (Well, really the only reason to come to Vancouver if you’re in Portland.)
A sweet little shop called, “Ice Cream Renaisance.” The atmosphere is like a cool coffee shop, but it’s an ice cream store. (Art on the walls, sometimes live music. The tables are all decorated with information about people from the Renaisance era)
And the Ice Cream-- oh my GOD. God himself has come down and blessed this store with the ultimate ice cream recipe of the heavens. They do some cool stuff too like a Picasso sundae which they take slabs of ice cream and make a sundae “the way Picasso would have envisioned it.” There’s also a Monet sunday a Dr. Chocolate sundae-- you get the point. Mmmmm… think I’ll head over right now and wait for them to open.
Movie theaters-- Well, as I alluded to before… there ain’t much to do here in The 'Couv. So consequently when me and the g/f are trying to think of something to do a movie is pretty high on the list most weekends. So I’d say we average 1-2 times a month. Sometimes waaay more depending on the # of good movies out. (For example, we just saw Insomnia/Minority Report/Bourne Identity in a day span.) But then, like I said… averaged out probably once or twice a month.
If we get a chance we will try to go to the $1 theater. Or to a McMenamins (Local brewpub type of place- some of them have theaters) where we can watch the movie & drink beer and eat pizza bread.
(I agree w/Dragongirl. Movies are so much-- if it were many more than Soccerduck and I, we’d probably rent a lot more movies/video games than we already do.)
I like almost every flavor of ice cream. At home, I usually eat Blue Bell. The Banana Split flavor is really the best. If I am going out for ice cream, I enjoy Marble Slab.
Movies: I might be the only human on the planet that walked out on Minority Report. Consider the fact that I had a cold and I was a little “under the weather” so to speak. But I stayed with it for about an hour and then I thought, hmmm, this isn’t cutting it. I usually see lots of movies, especially during the summer. I like the matinee. Not only a little less expensive, but also, less crowded. I am thinking of going to see The Sum Of All Fears today. I may wait til tomorrow.
110 degrees…good gosh that is hot. It feels like a jungle or rain forest here. I live in southeast Texas. We have had rain every day for about a week now. It is soooooooooo humid. UGH. Great movie weather.
Breyers has just released their new Almond Joy ice cream. It is far and away my favorite ice cream ever! I have two cartons of it in the freezer and I still wonder if its enough:)
As for movies, I like to go but my kids generally take first priority on cinema specific discretionary income. So I see most of the kids movies and wait for video for the ones I want. I’m going to see Lilo and Stitch today with my gf and her daughter, my kids are up at their summer cabin for two weeks so I save 15 bucks.
First the movie question. Probably 3-6 times a year. We have four kids, which means finding child care, or if it’s a tween friendly movie, childcare for the two youngest and taking the older kids - all which translates into many dollars, especially once you consider pop and popcorn once we’re there. I suspect we’ll go more often once the kids are grown.
Ice cream? I’ve never quested for the perfect ice cream. I imagine I haven’t even had it yet. I will go out of my way for Baskin & Robbins cheesecake varieties. Also, the frozen yogurt at Yogen Fruz does it for me.
herrell’s malted vanilla ice cream is unquestionably the vest best ice cream known to man. their chocolate pudding ice cream is pretty darn good too. i have spoken.
i heard through the grapevine, since i live in CA and can no longer rejoice in the ecstasy that is herrell’s, that they have released a new flavor: brown sugar and butter. the humanity!
for store-bought, haagen-dazs is making rocky road now. big gooey clumps o’ marshmallow. it’s all too much.
second would be ben and jerry’s coconut almond fudge chip, but they don’t make it anymore. alas and alack.
My personal favorite ice cream is Peanut Butter and Chocolate. I know, it sounds kinda gross, but peanut butter and chocolate tastes good, and somehow, frozen peanut butter just tastes awesome.
As for movies, I don’t get to see them much anymore because I’m paying for them myself (stupid becoming an adult shit). They’re damned near $8 here in Austin, and with great fantastic little hole in the wall video stores like I Luv Video that have some of the most obscure movies around for roughly $2.00 a vid, we spend most of our time watching videos. But now that I’ve been spending a lot of time with a friend who lives next door to the discount cinema, I’m thinking I’ll be checking out a lot more big screen movies in the future.
My favorite ice cream is Ben & Jerry’s S.N.A.F.U. It’s a combination of Cool Britannia (vanilla ice cream with strawberries and chocolate covered shortbread cookies) and Vanilla Swirl Fudge (self explanatory). I love the combination of flavors.
I see about 4-5 movies a month. I only go to matinees which range between $4.25 and $5.00 per movie ticket. I must be very easy to entertain because I can’t remember any movie that I walked out of.
Any ice-cream with either white chocolate or coconut flavour is tops for me.
Do I go to the movies? Yeah, as often as there’s anything worth seeing. This included Spiderman, which is worth seeing on the big screen and will lose something on vid, and I’ll be going to see Minority Report as well.
There’s a little local ice cream shop called The Hop here that makes all their stuff on the premises. Their peppermint ice cream is positively divine, and their lemon custard runs a close second.
I haven’t been working lately, so I’ve been taking in lots of matinees at the local art house. The last movie I saw was Nine Queens, a really terrific Argentinian con movie. I highly recommend it.
There’s a new Coldstone Creamery several miles away that’s totally worth the drive. I don’t know whose ice cream they use, but it’s wonderful. I had them make me a cheesecake yogurt with a graham pie crust mix-in and it tasted just like a frozen cheesecake.
Summer is the only time I ever get out to the movie theatres, but so far I’ve only seen Star Wars Episode 2.
Can any dopers from the Ohio area tell me if Graeters ice cream is any good? I read in the paper that Oprah said it was the best ice cream she’d ever had, and I’ve been thinking about ordering some ever since.
Even before Oprah butted in, Cincinnatians knew that Graeters is the Best Ice Cream Anywhere. A little expensive, but well worth it for the wonderful flavor and the chocolate ‘chips’ that fill the whole spoon. There’s at least one in Columbus as well.
If you don’t live near a Graeter’s, don’t order it, because you will discover that your life is meaningless if you cannot get Graeter’s on demand, and you will devise complicated schemes for getting transferred to Cincinnati.
I moved away from the hand-made Wisconsin-style frozen custard store that was just a few steps from my old apartment in Del Rey, Alexandria. But my work isn’t too far away, so I stop in once in a while to get some.
I have an extensive DVD collection, so I don’t go to movies all that often, unless it’s to see a blockbuster like Spiderman or Minority Report. This summer, though, there are four must-see summer movies: Men in Black 2, Reign of Fire, Austin Powers 3: Goldmember, and** Eight-legged Freaks**.
In addition, my condo complex has a pool, so I plan on spending most of my summer weekends there, staring at all the man candy.
Unfortunately, my BF hates science fiction and horror movies, and he won’t go swimming, so I spend most of my time alone.
No one favorite ice cream, but chances are, if it’s got chocolate in it, it’s not gonna last around me. Except for cheap store brands - they pretty much all stink.
I hate going to movies and I just go to make hubby happy. Now that he’s gonna be 800 miles away, he can go to all the movies he wants and I’ll wait for them to show up on cable or video. Sitting on the couch in a ratty bathrobe with a bowl of ice cream - THAT’S a movie experience!
Ice cream- either Greg’s Coffee Toffee (skor bar chunks in coffee ice cream) or practically anything from La Paloma, a Toronto gelateria that’s an unholy distance from my house. They have a chocolate gelato with huge chunks of Ferrero Rocher in it that I think I want to marry.
I usually don’t see movies very often, maybe once every 4 months, but this summer has been anomolous- I’ve seen Minority Report, Spiderman and AOTC. Oh, and I saw FOTR for the fifth time when i was visiting a friend in Iowa. It was $.50.
